So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

I think the consensus on AVS forums is the KS does not recognise the HLG signal as HDR and is clipping it to SDR.
That isn't the consensus. Many people are aware of the fact that HLG is supported internally. Fewer people know that it is supported externally via HDMI, but that's been proven to be true as well.
The issue with DirecTV is that DirecTV's equipment is having an issue communicating with the KS series TVs. Since the TV does support HLG over HDMI, this issue could be fixed with an HDfury, which allows for EDID management.
So what do we make of this
A clarification about the Samsung TVs 2016 (K series)
Currently through HDMI do not yet support the HDR HLG (Only via USB and Tuner support HDR HLG)
Soon will come a new version sw that will also enable HDMI to HDR HLG
While the models 2015 (J series) of Samsung will never be made compatible with the HDR HLG
Would'nt be great if Samsung would end all this speculation and tell us the facts. They must know because the built it. It is very strange why they will not and it would end all this speculation and at times ugliness. @AntS can you try to see if Samsung will answer these points that keep coming up which should end all this and we can get back to discussing what this thread is all about.

What I make of that is that whoever wrote that is wrong and that they have no clue what they're talking about.

This is incorrect, using external equipment to fill in EDID exposes the flaw, same problem is seen with chromecast Ultra as well, TV probably works with equipment that can translate HLG to HDR
TV has problem with HDMI handshake in advertising capability as HLG enabled device, Samsung have accepted this as fault but no timeline on fix - to summarize, prolem is not processing HLG rather in accepting HLG from certain sources like HDMI or BBC iplayer

Am I a bit thick (no need to answer), but even Samsung are saying you the KS can not convert HLG to HDR over HDMI. Just like the artical said you could not get HLG over HDMI and yet how come @UHDHDR says he can. Confussed!

Of course it's a fault, the EDID should be telling the DirecTV external device that it correctly supports HLG over HDMI, as can be seen with the M9500/M8500/M7500 blu ray players.
Hopefully they fix that.

Samsung isn't saying that. They are telling DirecTV that there is a communication issue specifically between DirecTV equipment and the TV.

Found this on,
The first one flags SDR and ST.2084 EOTF support (i.e. HDR10), the second one flags SDR, ST.2084 support and HLG support.
ST.2084 is used by HDR10, Hybrid Log Gamma is HLG.
I'd only expect the second one to work automatically with HLG HDMI sources (as it is the only one flagging HLG support), but both to work with HDR10.
It may be the first set doesn't have HLG support, but if the first one has HLG support for internal streaming sources it may be possible to force HLG modeI manually (I'm guessing the DirecTV box doesn't check for HLG support as it is using the SDR compatibility feature of HGL to send the same content for both SDR and HDR displays?)
My Sony XE9005 (UK version) has both HDR10 and HLG support - but when I play HLG content from a Roku Streaming Stick+ I have to manually switch to HLG mode to display the HLG content in HDR (either the Roku doesn't flag it or the TV doesn't switch)
I may be wrong but I think HLG support was initially only part of the HDMI 2.1 standard, and initially we were going to have to wait for HDMI 2.1 displays for HLG support. However it was agreed that it could be added to the HDMI 2.0b spec as well (or HDMI 2.0b displays could support HLG without adding any other HDMI 2.1 features) - to allow HDMI 2.0b sets to be upgraded to HLG with a firmware update, or HLG support to be standard on HDMI 2.0b sets.
Interesting

I'm gonna go out on a limb here... There is probably a good reason the ks doesn't advertise itself as HLG capable communicating with hardware over hdmi and i would bet its the reason it doesn't advertise that capability to iplayer as well. It can't do it properly! The only hardware people are talking about that "verifies" over hdmi are Samsung bluray players using an app that we know already works internally on the tv. I bet its just bypassing some check or their bluray player is broken and it doesn't do what its meant to do during communication. Which would be hilarious tbh...
Nah, people with an Oppo are reporting that their KS triggers HDR mode on their TV when they play HLG video via HDMI.
There is an issue with the way the TV displays HLG over HDMI, though. The image is so oversaturated. But that issue has been reported on 2016 Sony TVs as well.

I think the Samsung players are converting the HLG signal to HDR10 so the to get round the KS not being able to deal with the HLG source. I don't think the player is actually sending a HLG signal. That is why it looks like it is playing HLG.
But I could be wrong.
