So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

With the OP's permission, the title was changed on 12/03/2018 to accurately reflect the dominant theme of the thread as it has progressed. well thats just not true. The workflows and metadata stuff might change but the delivery mechanism, the one that samsung say can't be done has been defined for years.

dvb profile for mpeg-dash was sorted out in 2014. this isnt new standard at all. Once the transport gets to the TV then its handed off and the TV does the decode, we cant even get the stream!
not only that but the bbc did a uhd stream in 2014 for the world cup using this same transport.

I think the consensus on AVS forums is the KS does not recognise the HLG signal as HDR and is clipping it to SDR.

That isn't the consensus. Many people are aware of the fact that HLG is supported internally. Fewer people know that it is supported externally via HDMI, but that's been proven to be true as well.
The issue with DirecTV is that DirecTV's equipment is having an issue communicating with the KS series TVs. Since the TV does support HLG over HDMI, this issue could be fixed with an HDfury, which allows for EDID management.

That version of the profile is depreciated - the version we're needing to be implemented is the one that handles HLG and was put forward in December 2016.
You're correct otherwise, it's highly likely we'll be able to receive 4k transmissions, but only in SDR. The same situation the Sky Italia peeps are in now.
