Odyssey G7 menu button intermittently not working

I have this problem too

My #Samsung Odyssey G7 is around a year old, and recently it's been giving me problems

The main menu button on the back of the monitor sometimes, seemingly at random, fails to respond. Toggling the joystick left brings up the source menu, and down brings up volume. Left toggle does nothing, and the pressing the main menu button does not being up the menu.

Strangely, when scrolling through available sources, the directional buttons are inverted.

Holding down the menu button to put the monitor on standby (and get rid of the flashing light) also does nothing.

I have to pull the power cord instead, and this seems to reset the monitor and brings back menu functionality for a little while.

The sources that it uses are two HDMI sources (I have to swap cables when I want to use either device) and a Display Port source.

I am hoping to update the firmware to see if this fixes it, but as I am stuck on my work laptop (the Display Port input), I can't use a USB. Since I now can't switch source to my home PC without any kind of control, this will be an issue to update.

The button is not stuck, nor did it receive a bump or knock that may have broken it.

This is a real pain, and I'd rather not have to send my monitor (that I rely on for work and play) off for a few weeks/months if I can fix something on my end.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

so oddly enough, I had this issue, an update resolved it and then I just recently update the monitor and the issue has come about again. My issue now is that I cannot go about updating/retracting the update because I cannot access the menu. Any guidance?

So you can't get the menu up at all? It's been so long since I did this I can't remember what I did to update it I'm afraid and as it has been perfect since I haven't bothered with any more updates to it.

Can you not perform a factory reset and then reload the last working update? Other than that I'd suggest the dreaded Samsung technical help, sorry. Good luck. Let us know how you get on with solving it.

Hopefully you are still active, I've been dealing with this for quite a while and was wondering the proper way to update the firmware. I know you need to put it on a USB stick put it into the back of the monitor and go to the menu. My problem is the version model of my monitor seems to not exist anymore up here and if it will even fix the issue....any suggestions?

Given I could not use the menu button I could not update, so I simply unplugged and left unplugged for a few days and when I came back it worked.

It seems like the issue comes about when my friend plugs in his Macbook as an additional screen and uses the HDMI port vs. the Display Port. Not sure this will help you uncover anything but thought id make mention.

100% I have been pulling my hair out and close to destroying the monitor. Saw this and I was happy to whack it with whatever was closest.

It worked!!! Absolute relief. The frustration was unreal haha.

Thank you to the comments above for pointing this out. Saviours

Solution for joystick problems: Pull the plug out of the socket overnight.

I have a G7A and the joystick started doing random things and not the intended ones. I read somewhere that unplugging the monitor from the power supply helps, which actually solved the problem for me. I have a power outlet with a timer, and the monitor is without power overnight, and that solved the problem. I had previously sent the monitor in twice under warranty and the motherboard was replaced, but the fault reoccurred. Now that the warranty has expired, Samsung would not replace the monitor when the fault occurred for the third time. However, unplugging the power plug saved me. Hope this helps some people with joystick issues.

Thing is it's not heat related because when it stops receiving a signal everything magically starts working again. It's just poor software or poorly shielded components.

[Update: Just realized I did a similar post last year April 🙂 Sorry! But new pictures here!]

Honestly, the only thing that worked for me was to replace the joystick entirely. Below are some pictures which show that the original design is already flawed. That plus the recessed installation in this monitors frame makes it extremely susceptible to wear. The "whack it a couple of times" "Fix" only makes things worse.
The small metal connectors get dislodged over time making connections depend more on luck than anything else.
I replaced mine about 18 months ago and attached it outside the frame for easy access and hopefully longer life. But still it starts to show first signs of disconnects. I have another replacement, let's see when I need to use that one.
I would really love to see a firmware update that would allow us finally to control the OSD through USB.

For me, it is not only the joystick, also the game settnigs buttons. so when it is not working, pressing the game settings buttons cancels the current setting instead of swichting to game setting 1 (button 1), settings 2 (button 2), settings 3 (button 3)... Therefore, im not sure if only replacing the joystick would help me.

Can you explain how to do this? Like what parts to get and if theres anything going on besides desoldering the board it sits on. Not sure how much effort it would be. I'm okay with a soldering iron but i know little about electronics. If I can replace the joystick I could just keep using the screen.
