Smartphone new UI and sleep modes

The new UI has moved some of my apps randomly into sleep, deep sleep or never sleep mode.

It's not entirely clear to me if never sleep is required for apps that send notifications.

Do I need to put all apps that send notifications or run checks  i.e. email, BBC news, one drive, whatsapp, facebook etc etc into never sleep? A specific instance is a fitness app that uses GPS etc and it stopped working after the UI update. Do I need to put it into never sleep, or just make sure it is not in sleep or deep sleep.

Yes, any app that you need to send you reliable notifications and do background syncing such as WhatsApp, emails and the rest that you mentioned, and including your fitness app, all need to be put into the never sleep category.
