This never really worked well with my S8, no surprise it doesn't work at all with my new S22. When I dial a number manually or receive a call I'd sometimes like to create a new contact with that number. This was difficult on the S8, seems to be impossible on the S22. Selecting and holding the number does nothing except pull up the trashcan. Opening contacts does nothing, apparently this wasn't considered in the design.
Any help would be appreciated!

Opened "apps" and turned "allow notifications" for the contacts app, did a restart. It now works: Press the number in the "recents" list and I get the option to save the number in contacts.

When dialing manually, there is a + icon near the top right which you tap to get the option to create a contact.
When adding from the call list, you simply need to tap the number and the option pops up right there underneath the number.
I'm not sure what's gong on with your phones if your aren't getting these options. It's very strange.
Maybe you never noticed it because it's not super obvious? Could definitely be made clearer.

Thank you for your response. There is no plus sign at the side and nothing that says add new contact. When I click the number the only thing that happens is the trashcan comes up on the bottom of the screen.
I've owned several Samsung phones and I know from experience that they are VERY flaky. There is probably some configuration buried deep deep in the bowels of the phone that must be set or reset. I expect I'll find it if I'm persistent enough to search for two or three years.

That's a conundrum @pscarbor 🤔
On my Samsung Galaxy s²² Ultra when I go into my Samsung Phone App and tap on recents I have the add to contacts + option as indicated in my screenshot.
I assume your using the Samsung phone app and no 3rd party launcher etc.
Daily Driver > Samsung Galaxy s²⁵ Ultra 512Gb ~ Titanium Black.
The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.
I'm here to help. " This is the way. "

There is a plus sign on the dialer screen; however, this is not what I was asking about. Here's the scenario: Dial number, talk, hang up. Now I'd like to add this to my contacts. No way to do that.

I am using Samsung contacts and dialer. Again, selecting/clicking the number on the "recent" screen opens the trashcan - I can easily delete the number I just dialed (although why I'd want to do that is unclear). Nothing else comes up.
I've had this phone for a few days and as I wrote in an earlier reply I've used Samsung phones for several years; they all have some flakiness. Yesterday Verizon/Samsung pushed a "security update" and suddenly I could not dial out; the phone would disconnect immediately. Worked with Support for two hours; finally discovered that if wifi was on whether wifi dialing was on or not it wouldn't connect.
Restarted several times, reset the network, etc, etc. Support was making a ticket for me to ship it back for repair when suddenly out of the blue it started working. No dialing issues after that.
Like I said, flaky phones.
