Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED - black screens, connection losses, and more

Hello,

I have the G9 OLED for two days and have really lousy problems:

- when I start a game in fullscreen mode with the native resolution of 5120x1440, the monitor sometimes shuts down. There's no way to restore the image until I'm somehow able to either blindly quit the game or restart the PC - sometimes only the reset button helps.

- When starting certain apps or fullscreen applications, I hear a sound like a device is connecting and disconnecting. I also hear this randomly - it stopped, when I disconnected the USB cable from the monitor and ramains happening when I start full screen applications and exit them.

- I randomly have black screens every now and then without doing anything specific. And quite extreme: If I watch a video via any media player, enter fullscreen and move the mouse, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then returns. If I move the mouse again, the screen goes black again. This goes on and on.

- I am using an RTX 4090 with this monitor. When I set it to 240 Hz, the GPU memory clock rate is not downclocked when the PC is idle. That means the GPU memory clock (not GPU clock) is always running at max clock, which is not ideal for power consumption and temperatures.

I use a Display Port 1.4 cable with 32.4 Gbit/s, but also have an HDMI 2.1 cable with 48 gbit/s. This happens with both cables. As soon as I lower the monitor Hz to 120, the memory MHz goes back to the correct idle value, as it should. Is this a normal behavior?

- when I turn off VRR on the monitor, it is no longer possible to set the native resolution.

The monitor is running on the latest firmware version 1023.

These are honestly such massive problems that I am almost determined to return this monitor to Samsung as soon as possible.

Any input from more experienced Samsung users who have been able to remedy these issues?

Thanks so much!

I see 1007.1 was released yesterday. I have not tested it, not sure if I want to.

I can confirm based on my testings that the black screen issues on G93SC seem to not happen with HDMI (only with DP) and I rolled back to 1005.2 and it's been a week without those issues.

There was a post in the us community which explained how to do it but I see it was just archived.

https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Monitors-and-Memory/Odyssey-OLED-G93SC-Screen-Blackout-Issue-Pos...

Basically you need to download the 1005.2 and then rename it to something like "1006.6" (number greater than your current version) and it will allow you to install it. It seams like "0000.0" also works (as explained on page 5 of this thread) but I didn't test it.

Here is the download link from samsung for the "1005.2" firmware for the G93SC:

https://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/FM/202310/20231025152559257/49G93SC_USB_UPDATE.zip

I'm unsure if the black screen issues are due to 1006.3 or due to the upgrade framework being trash, but going back to 1005.2 solved the issue for me (took me a few attempts to get the usb recognized and to apply the firmware).

If anybody tests 1007.1 please report back your observations here, everyone appreciates it.

I installed the latest 1007 firmware yesterday and am currently testing it. I had been using firmware version 1006 for a long time, but earlier this week I got frustrated and switched to version 1005. However, I discovered the other day that the screen was suddenly turning off in version 1005 as well.

In any case, I'll try to report back to you in about a week on how the monitor is performing with firmware version 1007.

I am using a certified vesa hdmi 2.1 cable and can confirm the black issues with hdmi as well. I mostly get this when i am gaming for about 4 seconds. It is very random, i can go days...even weeks without it happening. I just thought i might be the cable or even the graphics card but notice a lot of owners are also experiencing this with very different setups etc. Do SAMSUNG know about this issue? I see in the latest update there is no change log information regarding the new fw. I do find it a bit slack of Samsung not to tell us the reason for the new fw.

CMON Samsung get to grips with this issue...this is one of your flagship monitors and for the price i think its ridiculous that we have to put up with this.

I got black screen playing GW2 every 5 minutes or so.

It is updated to 1007.1.

This is in Windows 11 HDR mode on.

Auto HDR off.

Professional (expensive) HDR 2.1 8K HDR bla bla bla cable and everything.

VRR enabled, as is everything G-Sync in Nvidia drivers (latest of course).

EDIT: Interesting discovery.

I limited the game to 60 FPS. No black screen so far.

I am going to increase FPS limit until I find the limit.

Woha, that topic kinda exploded, just like my email inbox 😃

Today there was a firmware update on my display with version 1570. I contacted support chat to ask what the changes are. The reply was: we don't have any change logs for our updates. Well, thanks.

Hi guys.

As soon as I saw the comment about a new version I went to check and my monitor already had it installed due to the automatic update (1570) and I am just testing but it seems that they have fixed the problem of black screens with DP, I will be doing some more tests but the behavior is no longer the same as it was with the other fw.

Likewise, it should be noted that I notice as if having G-SYNC activated there would be more input lag, so I will still be making some revisions regarding that.

As soon as I put it to 120 Hz in Nvidia settings, those black screens fully disappeared.

I guess electronics board of the monitor is to blame, drivers or firmware.

The ball is in Samsung's court.

With this new update, I cannot access the service menu with a Samsung service remote. Now I have the stupid game bar menu popping up again that I turned off in the service menu pre update.

Edit: I was able to get into the service menu and disable the game bar pop up.

I recently purchased the G9 OLED - Model: LS49CG932SNXZA and it came with firmware version 1006.3 For the first 5 days it was working phenomenally. In day 6 (yesterday) as soon as I turned my computer on and got to the windows login screen I instantly started seeing the screen glitching out randomly all over the screen. Not sure what was causing it to glitch out like that i decided to come  here to the forum and when I read all the comments about this monitor my heart sank. Why would a company like Samsung release such high end products like the G9 with so many issues and not be transparent with their customers about this issue? Needless to say I tried every possible thing to troubleshoot this issue and nothing has helped. I am on my last attempt at trying to fix the issue by installing the latest firmware (1007.1) that they released on July 17th and if this doesn't help then I will have no choice but to return the monitor as I am still within my 14 days. I will come back here with an update once I have more news to share.

[Update] it's been about an hour and a half since updating to 1007.1 and so far I am not having any flickering/ screen glitching issues. I will continue to test everything out heavily over the next couple days and report back my findings. Also, in the firmware unzip folder there is an update guide explaining two improvements. One was "add pixel refresh function", the other  was "enhanced panel protection feature" in case anyone wants to know...sorry in advance for the terrible screenshot.
