My TV is UE 50 RU7402. My speakers are Edifier R1280DB.

If I connect them through optical (toslink), I can't control the volume with Samsung's One remote. When I press volume up or down, the tv shows on screen the word "optical" and nothing happens.

Is there a way to control the volume?

If I understand correctly, when I search through TV settings it is possible to control speakers or AV receivers from other brands when connected with optical cable. So the optical connection  isn't "fixed". Why not having it "open" for all brands?

Is this going to change in the future with an update?

P.S. If I connect them through bluetooth I can control the volume with One remote just fine. But I prefer the sound through optical. Also, I have to re-pair the speakers every time I power on the TV.

I have Samsung model UN46h6201 smart tv.  My old Pioneer Elite Plasma TV came with 2 side speakers connected with speaker wire directly to TV.  I bought on Amazon male RCA cable s that end with speaker wire that connects to these speakers.  I also bought a Digital to Analog converter so I could connect an optical cable from TV out to converter.  Because the volume is so low coming out of the TV, this set up won’t work, although I can hear a little sound from the speakers so I know the speakers are working.  Since the TV has no Bluetooth or HDMI ARC output, it seems I must connect a receiver or amp to power up the speakers although this was not necessary with my old tv.  This tells me that when Samsung removed the RCA out jacks, they saved on the cost of built in amp on the motherboard to power these speakers.  As a result my next TV will be LG since the still have the RCA outputs.

Maybe a late reply, but i can control My Denon AVR volume with the Samsung remote

When you connect the TV with the optical cable and switch the sound to Optical you will hear the sound through the AVR, but can control the volume (you will see the speaker icon on the TV)

Pull the Optical cable out of you TV and then reconnect. You will see a message on your screen with something like : New device connected configuring.... bla bla....)

Now it will work with your TV remote (at least on my TV)

Problem solved-I went to the sound menu, chose optical for audio output and then scrolled to the right and clicked on “close”.  It then went into a pairing mode for smart remote and the “+” and “-“ reappeared when clicking on volume up or down.

Can anybody tell me how can I make the samsung TV remote control work with the volume UP and DOWN being connected with a VIZIO optical soundbar speaker? I've bought a Samsung 65" Q80B 2022 TV and I returned it because it never get connected with the wired internet modem and the toslink optical VIZIO soundbar. Now I have another Samsung TV Q7DA 2021 TV but still have the same problem. I cannot use the Samsung TV remote control to put the volume UP and DOWN using my optical VIZIO sound bar. It's a mess. I will be returning this TV if the problem doesn't fix. It seems like all this new Samsung TV need a new and a better software Update. It is very frustrating to buy a brand new Samsung TV that doesn't control the volume of the Toslink optical soundbar. It seems like Samsung is making their TVs to work only with Samsung soundbars Brand.
