My TV is UE 50 RU7402. My speakers are Edifier R1280DB.

If I connect them through optical (toslink), I can't control the volume with Samsung's One remote. When I press volume up or down, the tv shows on screen the word "optical" and nothing happens.

Is there a way to control the volume?

If I understand correctly, when I search through TV settings it is possible to control speakers or AV receivers from other brands when connected with optical cable. So the optical connection  isn't "fixed". Why not having it "open" for all brands?

Is this going to change in the future with an update?

P.S. If I connect them through bluetooth I can control the volume with One remote just fine. But I prefer the sound through optical. Also, I have to re-pair the speakers every time I power on the TV.

This works!!

Setup universal remote on the input (hdmi1-2-3-4) that you use  I promise it works and I found it on your tube but the stupid process to setup an account to share it with you I lost the link.

I can control my optical connected Samsung soundbar with just the Samsung rv remote no problem

Probably the link referred to.  I could never figure it out  not sure it was applicable to my situation.

i got my Klipsch working with my Samsung this way. If you are not familiar with Samsung sources you may need to watch video.
Thanks so much for this video. I never did figure out how to get all those HDMI sources to show up. But I did figure out out to get a Klipsch sound bar working with the Samsung One remote. The Samsung remote is Bluetooth and RF by default. But the Klipsch is IR only. I may have those flip flopped. But something said at the link below…the Klipsch is also programed to listen for Samsung soundbar signals. So like shown in this video. You

Sorry my comment got cut off. Or maybe I hit the button. So as shown in this video you need to configure a dummy device. A non-existing device. For the universal remote. Configure a Samsung soundbar. Say yes it works. Now your Samsung remote is talking the correct frequency that your Klipsch can hear. But you need to use the Klipsch learning feature to learn the signal from your Samsung remote. The truth is you could pick anything with a volume control. The real key here is that the Klipsch cannot hear the default Samsung One remote signal. So it cannot learn it.

Hi!

Incase you're still wondering how to fix the issue, I have a possible solution for you.

When changing to a never Samsung Tv with the "smart remote" I had this same issue with the optical not adjusting volume. After the videos of Nick & Steve and Cspec Curt I had no luck with my speakers. Then I realised, that my speakers (Audio Pro Addon T14) have this possibility to pair different remotes to work with them and that I had done this earlier on my older remote. I had tried this already before with the newer remote but it did not want to pair. The problem indeed was the RF and IR differences and that the newer remote did not emit the IR to connect. The solutions in these earlier mentioned videos were to enable this IR to the smart remote but then I still had to pair the remote with enabled IR to my speakers.

Vola!

If your speakers have this same type of possibility built in them to pair differently IR remotes to work with them, just enable the IR with the instructions from Nick & Steve or Cspec Curt and after doing so, pair your freshly enabled IR Smart Remote to your speakers with the instructions from the speakers themselves.

Go into settings, ‘Audio’ (or sound can’t remember) and select for audio output to come from TV speakers. It should work

Your tv remote is only made to control the tv speakers.  The reason optical shows up is due to the tv recognized volume control being used from remote.  I know certain external speakers such as Sonos.  You can use app when setting up and program you external speakers to work with your tv remote.  If the speakers aren’t able to be controlled by another remote there’s nothing that can be done.  Looks like those speakers have rca plugs.  If your tv has rca out it should allow you to control them with tv remote.  You’ll have to leave tv speakers on as well.  Looks like those speakers have optical to first then speaker wire to feed other speakers.  Sonos has it’s own wifi capable.  I have the sound bar hooked up optical as well as an internet connection hardwired.  Then I can add other speakers only needing a power outlet.  So I have a sound bar, bass and 2 play 5 speakers all while watching tv using tv remote.  I can also just speaker levels like bass etc through app.  I can also use them to listen to music through app while tv isn’t in use.  I can install other speakers throughout house and play individually or all at once.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

RVRoo - THIS WORKED!!!

I have been struggling with this for months.  The inability to control the sound from the external speakers and resulting need for multiple remotes was becoming an issue in my household.  I have spent HOURS searching for a solution and tried at least 30-40 methods.  YOURS WORKS!!!

My setup:

2021 Frame TV => Audio out via Optical (Toslink) => DAC bought on Amazon => RCA connectors => Old style Technics Receiver (no Digital, no HDMI, no Toslink - it is old)

Speakers connected to old style receiver via old style speaker wire

Process:

My TV is not connected to the internet, but I had previously connected it and updated it's firmware to 1904

Previous to trying RvRoo's process I had changed settings MANY times, so I think (not 100% sure), in Settings I had

Sound/sound output = optical

Sound/expert settings/HDMI eARC = Auto

Sound/expert settings/Digital output Audio = PCM

Then I followed RvRoo's directions as pasted below with the differences noted in red

  1. in Source I went to Universal Remote.
  2. clicked Home Theatre
Had apparently done this before, so confirmed I wanted to override the existing Home Theatre settings
  3. searched for amplifier brand: NAD
My Brand is Technics.  It is not on the list so I added it manually
  4. chose Optical port
  5. do the Power Test, failed, clicked “No”. Tried again. Failed again.
In my case, the Power Test did NOT fail, but I clicked no anyway.
  6. after a couple fails,  it offers to find the model number, so I found the D3020.
I clicked no 4 times, even though each time the test did NOT fail.  After selecting no 4 times, the Samsung came up with a box to enter  a model number.  I entered my model number using a dash in the number as on the front of the receiver, after which the Samsung actually pulled up a list of Technics receiver models but without the dash, and I selected mine.
  7. then the Power Test still failed, but instead of stopping, I now just selected “Yes”,
    Selected "Done"
  8. Setup complete

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!

Amazing how the issue is still persistent in 2022. Seems like there's a bug that needs some fixing. I contacted their support center and they recommended these steps, they worked for me.

  1. Switch off the TV and the sound bar(or whatever output connected).
  2. Unplug from mains for about 30 secs.
  3. Connect back the devices, power up the TV and set it up again.  Check out this link for manual setup - https://www.samsung.com/ae/support/tv-audio-video/how-to-set-up-the-universal-remote-through-mbr/

I have exactly the same "problem", I don't know if this is a bad feature or a bug, my remote powers on and off the xbox, the tv, and has the option to power of the cable decoder, but not the speakers, maybe I'm missing something? A option I can't find?

Set the advanced sound option to PCM (not dolby or anything else), this will make the speakers sound.

After that, go to the remote control setup:

- add home theater

- select search brand and type just "ed"

- select edifier and search your speaker model, if the model don't shows up, try one by one similar models (I have the r2850db and it's not listed, I selected r1280db) and it works .

The only thing that doesn't work is power on/off the speakers
