TV: UE55 NU7500

I'm not sure whether this is a general Samsung issue or just to do with my TV, but the amount of space allocated to the Smart Hub apps seems to be seriously lacking.

As this is a new TV I thought I'd explore some of the available apps, but when I went into the Apps area I got a message saying that there was insufficient space to update apps. This was before I had downloaded anything, so it would purely apply to the pre-installed apps.

I checked settings and the used space was 751MB with 64MB available, i.e. 7%. This seems absurd as these apps can't be deleted and are built into the system. The available space doesn't even allow them to be updated. I then tried resetting Smart Hub. This has helped to an extent as the available space is now 13%. However, it's still far too low and whenever I try and download a new app I get a warning about available space.

I can't believe that the pre-installed apps are taking around 700MB of space, and it seems crazy that Samsung would design the system this way. Presumably I will have to install an SD card to provide more space for the apps?

Any tips welcome as this is my first Samsung TV.

Can we flash a custom firmware or downgrade official firmware somehow, or can we upgrade the system memory to 2gb or something,  Samsung gave us "Store" that have almost nothing and we can't install nothing becouse of  insufficient memory ?

Depending on model you can add USB storage or update using a memory stick I think (I've done the latter and it worked OK).

Ok, let me post my experience for the last one day i play with my UE55NU7092 tv and sumarize things i do:

1. Service Menu / Factory Reset: Turn the TV OFF then press INFO then SETTINGS then MUTE then POWER your IR remote.

2. Install Twitch via this guide: https://github.com/fgl27/smarttv-twitch

3. Enable developer mode in apps (tv firmware 1292): Open Apps and enter on remote 1 2 3 4 5, switch DEV mode ON at the top of the dialog box then choose OK. Hold POWER on remote until TV goes OFF and then back ON (release POWER on remote), go back into Apps, goto the e-manual and lock it, select Deep Link Test at the bottom and enter some random content id, choose OK. After that update message appear for the e-manual and choose update later.  Then Apps freeze and press EXIT on the remote. Re-enter Apps again and DELETE option should be active.

Tried the above on my NU7093 55inch which showed no internal storage left.

Reset smart hub which gave me 10% storage available after rest, but unable to remove E-manual.

I have turned off auto update on both Apps and firmware.

Question i have is... Are these ***** Apps added with firmware update or app updates?

I only use TV for Apps not the browser,  do i need to keep updating firmware.

If not can i just leave as they are and update the Apps i use  manually, this should at least give me space to update  the ones i need and not all the others.

Looks like I have this on my UE49NU7500 which cannot update or install new Apps becuase of storage issues.

I haven't tried the USB method yet but it does seem a bit clunky to rely on slow external & vulnerable storage media for what is otherwise a built in media server. Thank you Samsung.

This will go on the list of reasons to not buy another Samsung TV along with...

1. A bug where the TV input when using FreeSat keeps defaulting back to Freeview, usually after firmware update, have to manually change it back again in CH list menu.

2. for IP control from a third party control system there is no Guide button available.

How can you, in 2019, release a 'smart TV' with only 750MB of storage?

We all know that you get circa 100MB for your own apps after OS.

So I have had my 65NU7400 for a year and kept contacting Samsung over this issue.

Fobbed off is the common denomination by the look of it.
I have been told to reset my telly; add a usb stick; add a hard drive via usb amongst other things. Except for the main fact that the internal storage is only 750MB!! That's the problem.

Jesus. We spoke about Megabytes in 2000. A cheap smartphone has 16GB of storage as a minumum

My last correspondence was 'You're out of your warranty now. Call your vendor"

Hence, I phoned John Lewis today. Tom, on the other end, was excellent. Laughing with me over the amount of initial storage AND consequently the storage allowed after the Tizen OS. He couldn't believe this was possible

NOW.

My argument with John Lewis is that the NU7400 is described as a "Smart TV with 1000s of apps available in the Samsung store".
I put one on and it worked fine.

Turned the TV on next morning, all the bloatware updated and I was left with nothing.

I then get told that Samsung issues a warning to add Antivirus to the TV.

Please tell me how the hell am I supposed to update? The Samsung update requires 178MB and even if I reset the TV, I only have 110MB. Never mind adding an antivirus.
So, because my TV can't update and plug any security holes, it is now a security risk (never thought I would ever say my TV was a security risk). Add to the fact that the apps that I can't download, or install, maybe infected with a virus? And I can't add an Antivirus because I have no space.

Explaining this to John Lewis went easier than expected.

Samsung will not do anything ....... except;

It 'claims' to be a Smart TV.  Yet, the number of apps that are forced on you, and the number you can actually install, now falls foul of your consumer rights AND trade description.

Don't get me wrong. The screen is excellent and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. But don't call it a smart TV, unless you want forced apps and adverts in the software.

John Lewis have been excellent in their handling of this.

Perhaps there is a legal precedence here is we are recommended to install anti-virus but are not able/allowed to?

When I bought the TV I don't remember it saying 'Storage not included' in a Batteries not included style.

Yes there is some storage but it is rather a 'bios button battery' by comparison.

Didn't think my reply would trigger such extra feedback.

Sadly, I have got nowhere my end as I can not track where I originally purchased ir last year (My mother done it through somewhere, I simply paid for it) I will have ot dig through some statements and see if I can work it out.

Anyway, Rowley1 the only humour I can give you in response to the AV situation. All is good as ther eis not enough space for a virus anyway :smiling-face:

Jokes aside, is there not some sort of joint petition, claim, complaint we can put to Samsung or a Ofcom/Watchdog type company to see if we can get something done about this? Even if it is to prevent this sort of nonesense in the future.

Okay so this partially worked for me. I managed to delete all the apps I didn't want (BritBox, AppleTV, UKTV PLay, Chili etc.) and I was left with 290mb free space. I disabled Auto Update in an attempt to make sure these apps didn't return on restart, but guess what, they did 🙂 I spent ages getting to the point where I could delete the bloatware, only for the ***** thing to reinstall them on restart. Any ideas how to stop it from reinstalling them automatically?
