The type of card, the A53 5G does support SD cards. Is this a new card or was it working previously and did you have any Data in it? Before using an SD card for the first time you should format it https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/using-an-sd-card/ if still can not get it working firstly try a soft Reset , press and hold the Power and Volume down Buttons for at least 7 seconds until the Device Reboots. However if still issue best to remove SD card and inspect for any damage or debris and in any case advisable to give it a clean. once all fine there reinsert and see if the card is recognised now.
I do not work for Samsung or make Samsung Products but provide independent advice and valuable contributions.

@MiniMcDuff2258: The Galaxy A53 5G is compatible with Micro SD cards up to 1TB capacity. If your card meets these specifications, then please take a look at page 19 of the user manual to find a guide on how to correctly install the SD card via the underside of the SIM card tray.
If the SD card was previously installed in another device, you may need to back it up via an external device (e.g. a home computer) and format it for use with your Galaxy A53 5G. In this instance, please head to Settings > Device care > Storage > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Advanced > SD card > Format. For further guidance and troubleshooting steps, please refer to the link below.
