Go to Settings > Apps > (tap the three dots in the top right corner) > Reset app preferences and then tap Reset to confirm
Download Nice Catch from galaxy play store and give it time to gather information and see if you find out what it is causing this

@Lazyjoney: Are you hearing a notification sound when receiving messages from a specific contact, or are all contacts affected? If it is a specific contact, please try opening the Samsung Messages app > Tap on a conversation with an affected contact > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Tap the highlighted bell symbol in the bottom right of the pop-up window.
You may also wish to try heading to Settings > Apps > Samsung Messages > Notifications > Notification categories > New messages > Sound > Select 'Silent' > Back > Make sure 'Vibrate' is toggled on.
