Can anyone tell me why my sim card is only registering to sim 2 and not sim 1 where it should be

If you are in the UK pull the sim tray out and check both sides my fold fold 4 and 2 sides for 2 sim cards

SIM1 is on the back of the SIM tray. SIM2 is on the front, so is the one you'd naturally use, hence your problem. 😁
