There's a widget (long press on empty Home page area) named Signal Strength. You will first have to add that app from the Google Play Store to have that show up in Widgets.
Netflix offers a free link to show your download speed, Fast.com. Open a browser, go to fast.com and save that link to your Home page. In your browser somewhere you'll have the option to save a link to your Desktop.
This is a great option for those sites that don't have an app. For example, your bank or financial institution might not have a specific app for you to use but you can still use a link to their site saved to your Desktop instead.
