Is the tone your assigning one if the pre installed tones ?
Or has the tone been downloaded via the Internet ?
If so then the phone may not like the file .
Personally I download my tones via zedge.com and I've had no issues.
The only other issue maybe that the app your assigning the tone to does not allow a bespoke tone to be used.
You can't circumvent this.
