Samsung S23 Ultra updated today and I am seriously irritated with this update. First thing I noticed my navigation bar, I had the option of swipe or buttons. I have always used swipe for navigation and my recent apps were on the right and my back to the left with home being center. You used to be able to choose left or right for either. Now it is incredibly difficult to get to my recently used apps. Everytime I used the navigation bar it sends me to the home screen. If I wanted to go to the home screen I'd swipe in the middle. Everywhere does it now. Can't go back a page or to recent apps it all sends me home. There's an annoying period where you have to hold to get recent apps to show up. This is stupid and inefficient. Secondly it keeps opening apps up when I'm trying to scroll through my pages of apps that I'm not selecting just trying to turn the page and it's not responding correctly just opening apps. Very disappointed so far and will continue to notice things I hate about this update throughout the day. Wish they would revert the update.

I just came here to say that I'm not a fan of this update. I do not want my phone to function like an iPhone. The whole reason I buy android devices, Samsung specifically, is for the level of customization. I shouldn't have install two, 3rd party apps, just to restore its functionality back to the way it was when I purchased the phone. This is unacceptable.
Unless they change it back, I will longer be purchasing Samsung products.
*Just an added note, it's practically impossible to swipe the back button, when I'm messaging during a live broadcasting app, where you have video and chat. Swiping my finger from left or right, trying to close the keyboard...always results in my entering random text instead. The navigation bar is broken and it's not compatible with current software.
Over dramatic response!
When using a keyboard, normally people swipe left and right, not up and down. The old functionality relied on screen swipes from the bottom of the phone. NO OTHER APP USED THIS FUNCTION. This is a rookie mistake from a major company.

Seriously who at Samsung thought it was a good idea to remove the three navigation lines and put it to one. I'm finding myself trying multiple times just to open the screen to show all my open apps. I either open Google, do nothing, or finally after 5 to 6 swipes, get what I wanted done. No one asked for this. One of the worst updates I've ever experienced. I absolutely hate it. Now thanks to other comments, I'm learning that you need to download another app just to get back a previously perfect functioning feature? Such a joke.

Yes, I am having the same issue! Very annoying. I know how to use the other mode, but prefer the air mode. Hope they fix this ASAP!

I have an S23 Ultra, and all the solutions mentioned in this thread do not seem to be working in dual messenger apps or the secure folder. Using WhatsApp as an example, by virtue of NavStar the issue was fixed for the main copy of WhatsApp (i.e., the black bar is no longer present). However, the black bar is still present in both the dual messenger copy of WhatsApp and the secure folder version. It is possible that these copied apps cannot read the additional settings from NavStar. Moreover, Good Lock cannot be installed in the Secure Folder.
I suppose the only solution would be to wait for a system update from Samsung, if they are willing to fix the issue.

You are a hero!
I was seriously about to throw my phone out the window! Hope Samsung realise how bad of a move this was and fixes this natively in their next update.

I gelt the same. Now the good news: to open recent apps, 'take' the bottom bar and move it up to the center, and hold there for a bit. It opens the recent apps.
To move back, swipe from the left side towards the center. If you keep pressing at the end of the swipe, you can go back multiple pages.
Hope it helps. Honestly I would have expected an explanation somewhere, not discovering by accident.
