Just got the new UI update and it has made Smart Select completely useless now.

I used to use smart select all the time for quickly and easily sending pre-cropped screenshots either using the edge panel shortcut or the double tap s-pen shortcut. But since it's now been turned into "AI Select" it's basically useless.

It now takes longer to use because of the stupid sparkle animation they've added and waiting to initialise the AI (that I'll never bloody use) than to just take a full-screen screenshot and then crop it.

Please, for the live of God samsung, let us turn off the AI or have AI select and Smart select as 2 separate things on the phone.

I used it like how the snipping tool works on windows. It just basically took a screenshot of the selected area instead of having to crop the screenshot afterwards.

My main use was posting a screenshot into a work chat to prove I had done the opening routines and only needed to send a section of the screen so I would use the SPens double tap shortcut, circle the part I needed to send and then press the share button l. The whole process took maybe 3 seconds.

It now takes about 3 seconds for the sparkle animation to go away before I can select.

I'm not talking about circle search, I'm not talking about Gemini or bixby vision.

OP is totally right. I dont understand how people here dont understand, but still need to comment. Smart Select was Good. For making Screenshots. Ai Select is awful for making screenshots. Maybe its good for whatever. If you like it, use it. I dont like it, I liked smart select. It has been taken away without proper replacement. I like using AI, I use Gemini. But not for taking Screenshots. Why would I? I know what part of the Screen I want to crop, I got eyes, hands, an s-pen. Why would I need help doing a screenshot? If some people do need help by AI with that, thats fine to me. Give them AI select. Give them all the AI features they never needed. Make itna religion. I dont care. But dont shove it up my face. Let me do screenshots. In peace. Makes me angry reading this topic. Cant wait to see humanity being a bunch of brain aputees because they start using AI Whattothink. After being told to use it by AI whentothink. Wich is the only thing stopping them from doomscrollong tik tok. Wich they do all day because thats how you enjoy life without risking to use your brain. Lovely. And im not hating on AI i use Gemini a lot. But when I want. For tasks where it makes sense. In MY opinion.

You have "Take a screenshot " tool in edge panel

Thank you, that works. It wasn't on my S23 edge panel by default: I had to add it there. And it isn't called 'Take a Screenshot' on my device, either. It is 'AI Select'. But the icon is the same. I put the Edge panel in edit mode, then opened the 'hamburger' menu (⁝) top right. This opened a panel of options, including a section headed, 'Galaxy AI'. It includes 'AI select', 'Drawing assist' and 'Interpreter'. I recognised the icon for 'AI select' matched the screenshot in your post, so I selected that. ('Interpreter' was already selected.) 'AI assist' then appears in my Edge panel. Better yet, it has also replaced 'Interpreter' as the first option in s-pen pop-up menu, where 'Smart Select' always used to be. So far as I can tell, it behaves the same as 'Smart Select'.

Just like some of the others here, I use this tool to grab screenshots or partial screenshots pretty constantly, just as I do on Windows using the Snip tool. I agree some of the AI functions can be useful, like extracting text and searching for images etc. But grabbing a quick screenshot is a different function and I still find it useful.

That takes en entire screen screenshot though.

What i want is the snipping tool that we had, and has been taken away.

 And this is AI smart

These are two different panels, the first one is not AI, the second one is AI

Yes, but you take a full screen screenshot and then crop.

What I wanted was the old feature we had where we could take a pre-cropped screenshot with one quick shortcut.

I'm not debating that ai select can or can't do it as well.

I'm annoyed that something that used to be a single quick action is now slower and requires extra steps.

You clearly aren't actually understanding what I'm trying to say and just keep reiterating the same, pointless, examples.

So I just give up at this point

AI is great and all, but honestly a feature for clipping screenshots doesnt need an AI its a waste of my battery, and honestly it just doesnt work, if i select a box around text i cant screenshot it only copy it... how is that useful to anyone.

I just recently got the newest update and am beyond frustrated with the new AI select that has replaced the Smart Select. OP is absolutely right - it is MUCH slower, it is far more finicky when selecting, and it has made my most used feature my most agitating one. It should be optional to use the AI select. I want features that improve my experience, not hinder it.
