I agree with this. I reported this nerve-racking issue to Samsung through Samsung Members, and this is the response they sent me. They gave me an irrelevant reply and attributed the issue to other reasons as if they know it's a company policy to develop updates to make older models less efficient so that users are pushed to buy the new models. This is truly unethical. I am seriously considering switching to Apple.
Here is the reply:

Dear Customer
We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
To test your phone's parts you can use Samsung Members app at below path:
Samsung Members >Get Help > Diagnostics > Start
Here you can select Battery of your phone for test.
For each model of phone, the tips on how to properly maintain the battery are included in its manual, it is recommended to read it and generally consider the following to keep your mobile battery properly:
Applications used to manage the battery may have a direct impact on the battery of the device.
Also, frequent use of the device while it is charging will calls a very direct effect on the battery.
How long your battery will last varies depending on many factors including how you use the device, Mobile Network signal strength and device usage periods.
Also, having many apps running in the background will consume additional power. Close apps to reduce the power consumption.
Your device will also consume more power when you use mobile data in areas with very low Network signal.
The battery is a consumable item. Overtime, eventually, its ability to hold charge will reduce. If over time you find that after optimising your device (see below note) the battery appears to hold much less charge than it used to, it may be time to replace the battery.
To maximise your battery life time:
ㆍ Optimise device performance going to Settings > Device maintenance
ㆍ Put apps to sleep to extend your battery life going to Settgins > Device maintenance > Battery
ㆍ Turn off the display when you aren't using the device.
ㆍ Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS when they are not in use.
ㆍ Apps that automatically sync data in the background will consume more power, so turning off auto sync will help.
ㆍ Set the screen timeout to 30 seconds and the display brightness to Auto.
Frequent use of mobile data ,wifi and bluetooth can reduce battery percentage.
Please stop downloading and installing apps from unauthorized sources. These malware apps will harm your phone. The only authorized sources for downloading and installing apps are Google Play Services and Galaxy Store.
And if issue still existed try to reset your phone’s settings at below path:

It's most definitely NOT a battery degradation issue or old battery issue or whatever, because I've had my phone set to limit the charge to a maximum of 80% since the first day I've owned it, specially to stop the battery from degrading! Even with my phone set to 80% max charge, I was ALWAYS getting 8+ hours of heavy use screen on time before it dropped to the 15% low battery warning threshold. Then as soon as the 6.1 update hit my phone it suddenly only gets about half the battery life it did before.

I have encountered a similar issue following the recent update. The primary cause appears to be the Contact Storage application, which is consuming a significant portion of the battery, exceeding 50% compared to all other applications. It is imperative that Samsung address this matter promptly by releasing an update to resolve these battery-related concerns.

I did 3 things which improved the battery backup
1. Reset all settings
2. Turn off 'RAM PLUS'
3. Under settings > Device care , click Optimize now.
Once that's done charge the phone to 100..
