It does seem from similar posts in regards to Android Auto that some users are experiencing some issues with various models of Samsung phone's @Fulham1965

If you perform a forum search you'll find these posts which may hold some guidance.

Sometimes checking the permissions of the app can help in Settings > Apps > Android Auto.

Additionally clearing the cache  / data of the app can help too.

Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear Cache > If necessary also Data.

Samsung Help Link  > https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/i-am-having-difficulty-connecting-to-or-using-andr...

If I can be of any further help then please don't hesitate. Take care.  😎

The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.

Thanks for your reply.
I've tried all that and also the debugging option. The cable works OK because I used that to connect my wife's phone. Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks

On your car's head unit, find the setting that has a list of phone profiles, and delete yours. Next, open up the Android Auto app in your phone's settings - flush the cache and the data. Now, begin re-pairing your phone to your head unit. Hopefully, you should now be back in business. 😉
