Several days ago both of the microphones on my Galaxy A12 failed during phone calls and voice recordings using the messaging app. At best I could hear, and others I was talking to could hear, very faint sounds surrounded by static.
However....
When I use the video feature on the Camera app, both microphones record my voice clearly, without any static.
I am completely baffled as to the nature of this problem. Is it bad hardware? Bad software?
I tried a full factory reset and every other bit of advice related to the microphones, but the problem remains consistent.
The mics do not work when I make a phone call; they do work when I record a video.
Thanks in advance!

The only way I found to overcome the problem was to turn the speaker on when making a call, turn the volume down if want more privacy, not perfect but will do until Samsung sort the problem out.

The mic unit failed in the A12's.
The only solution is to replace it for $9.

Its a software issue not hardware. The mic works on loudspeaker. Its factory error. Samsung must take responsibility. I replaced whole sub board and same mic error.

Why is mine working now and it seems most others are not? Doesn't that mean it's software? Or maybe only some of them have this problem, which means it could be a hardware ...

I am a smartphone technician. I get at least 5 phones monthly with same issue. Its software issue that samsung doesent want to admit. We need people to raise lawsuit. Period.

I replaced the mic board and that solved the problem with the bottom mic.

I as well have the same problem after the last update! At first I thought it was the mic but then another Android I did the exact same thing! And because I just started using it I had to update it. The mic works up until after updating! You shouldn't pay for a phone and then have to pay for a headset just to use your phone! Then you can't answer phone calls you got to go put the headset in and then call back! They need to come out with a new update to fix their issue! Or everybody's going to just start switching to a different brand of phone!

I had the same issue starting last week. After an hour and a half on the phone with Samsung the issue was still not fixed. They suggested I call Batteries Plus. Batteries Plus referred me to a franchise store called You Break I Fix. I took the phone to them and they replaced the board containing the microphone. It cost $80. The phone is working fine now.
