When I make a phone call, I'd prefer the display screen to stay on the whole time. I know when I put the phone up to my ear the phone thinks this is a good time to make the screen go dark. That would be ok, if I could control it when I take it away from my ear,

Hi @Gerry Peters ,
this cannot be turned off. Keep in mind that the phone app has this feature embedded so you don't tap on anything accidentally during the call. Anyway, if you need to tap keys during the call you should be able to do it by enabling the feature mentioned by @AndrewL (Keep screen on while viewing).

I am having the same issue as Gerry Peters. I can be typing and the screen goes black. It also goes black while my fingers are on the screen. While on a call whether in speaker mode or phone up to ear it shuts off the screen after about 5 seconds.

I wish they would fix this. It's pretty irritating. This so called feature should be an option for those of us that aren't so worried about their battery running low. Using the speakerphone helps, but doesn't solve it

I'm having the same problem with screen not staying on during a phone call and I almost always use my phone on speaker, my screen timeout is on 30 minutes, motions and gestures to keep screen on while viewing and also double tap to turn screen on, BUT IT DOESN'T WORK! So if I'm stuck in a phone tree and need to enter options, the screen doesn't come up and it makes these calls really difficult - is there anything else that might work??? (please consider doing a patch for this issue)?

This is an irritating problem. Does Samsung monitor this forum and get suggestions for problem and quirks. Like my post says above this one, we should be able to turn off this frustrating so called feature, if it's too hard to fix

This worked for me:
Settings - Modes and Routines
Select "Add mode"
Give the new mode a name and click "Done." Select "Turn on Automatically" and press the + next to "App Opened" then select your phone app. Then press "done."
Select "Add condition" and select "During call." Then press "Done"
Then under "Choose what this mode does" select "Other actions" and "Add action." Select "Display" and "Brightness" then select a brightness level.
Select "Done"
I hope this works for you.

This sounds perfect, except i don't have Settings - Modes and Routines. What is your latest software update? I let my phone update when it asks. I wonder if you have some special feature installed that give you Modes and Routines.

If I'm looking in the right place, mine is S911USQU1BWK4, updated on December 4.

I have a Samsung A12 and my latest software starts with A125U, whereas yours starts with S911. What is the model # of your phone? I wish I had that feature.

I recently upgraded to an S23 from my previous S7. That was a big jump in features, so practically everything about the S23 is new to me. I just discovered Modes and Routines today. Sorry I wasn't able to fix the phone screen problem for you.
