Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED - black screens, connection losses, and more

Hello,

I have the G9 OLED for two days and have really lousy problems:

- when I start a game in fullscreen mode with the native resolution of 5120x1440, the monitor sometimes shuts down. There's no way to restore the image until I'm somehow able to either blindly quit the game or restart the PC - sometimes only the reset button helps.

- When starting certain apps or fullscreen applications, I hear a sound like a device is connecting and disconnecting. I also hear this randomly - it stopped, when I disconnected the USB cable from the monitor and ramains happening when I start full screen applications and exit them.

- I randomly have black screens every now and then without doing anything specific. And quite extreme: If I watch a video via any media player, enter fullscreen and move the mouse, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then returns. If I move the mouse again, the screen goes black again. This goes on and on.

- I am using an RTX 4090 with this monitor. When I set it to 240 Hz, the GPU memory clock rate is not downclocked when the PC is idle. That means the GPU memory clock (not GPU clock) is always running at max clock, which is not ideal for power consumption and temperatures.

I use a Display Port 1.4 cable with 32.4 Gbit/s, but also have an HDMI 2.1 cable with 48 gbit/s. This happens with both cables. As soon as I lower the monitor Hz to 120, the memory MHz goes back to the correct idle value, as it should. Is this a normal behavior?

- when I turn off VRR on the monitor, it is no longer possible to set the native resolution.

The monitor is running on the latest firmware version 1023.

These are honestly such massive problems that I am almost determined to return this monitor to Samsung as soon as possible.

Any input from more experienced Samsung users who have been able to remedy these issues?

Thanks so much!

i have no idea, probably some shitty rule in either my country or urs so they cant have the exact same model. very wierd to not release the update for everyone though. talked to their support yesterday and to sum it up he said "lower the resolution and the refresh-rate until it works" and "get a service technician to look at it but you will have to pay for it unless it is very obviously samsungs fault(probably not)...". if i pay for 240hz, hdr, g-sync, 5120x1440, i wanna use it or what do they think? this monitor costs more than a average monthly salary in sweden

Sad to hear the problems are not getting better. Point any Samsung Helpdesk support to this thread as the problem obviously does not just affect you.

I strongly believe its a display port bandwidth DSC problem as HDMI2.1 worked much better than DP1.4 on my RTX4090.

Great, I'm afraid to update to the latest version now also.

The first thing I'd do is I would get one of these cables...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPJ9VYF1?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder_k0_1_20&amp=&crid=1A9OW3Y1O6K9M&spref...

This is a fairly inexpensive Fiber Optic cable and it will put you in the best position to get the bandwidth you need.   I have tried over 100 cables, and not all cables are created equal.   These have given me the best results so far with the monitor...

from there I would try either 120hz no settings (no HDR, no Adaptive Sync, Game Mode off) and then try Game Mode On (Adaptive Sync On) and then from there you can try HDR... but so far with the 2044 update Currently running at max resolution at 240hz with no HDR enabled (off), I've had better results going from sleep to (wakeup) and haven't had any black outs yet in 'windows' or Unity or Substance Painter or Blender...  but I will report back when I do... I haven't played any games yet so I can't give any honest feedback on 2044 until I do.   I am going to run this way until I go a few weeks with no blackouts then I will try HDR on next.

So they are basically giving you a cable with the monitor that doesnt work? iv bought a 1.4 dp and a 2.1 hdmi aswell with no luck. dont think 5120x1440@120hz even is an option in nvidia settings with game mode off unless i make a custom

People need to stop pointing the finger at the cable, the cable is (most likely) not (if your cable is within spec) the issue. I still am using the same exact cable I was using with my Neo G9, had the Neo G9 since that was released with a 3070/3080/4080 with absolutely zero issues with the Neo G9. Since day one of owning the OLED G9 (same 4080 and Maxonar 1.4 DisplayPort cable) the problems occurred. This is a monitor issue, not a cable issue.

IF this was as simple as using the wrong cable, Samsung would announce this. How many people have contacted support and support says "oh, this is the first we're hearing about this"? It's clear as day the issue is with the monitor and Samsung is keeping their mouths shut.

I agree with you, the cable is most likely not the reason.. but I absolutely saw less blackouts and less issues with the fiber cable I linked vs others including the original.   We just have to hope the devs figure out a way to make it work with all cables.

Okay the only other thing still possible is this:

My Zotac 5090 has DisplayPort 2.1 b (Dp2.1b). This is not the case for all cards. Some new cards have 2.1a.

Check with the manufacturer technical specifiation document which port it is. MAYBE 2.1B IS REQUIRED for this monitor to work correctly. Hence all new AMD cards work too as they have 2.1b.

Dude, why don't you tell us what monitor reference you're running on and what firmware.
You're like a little girl with a secret to hide...
At least you told us what version of 5090 you have.

Otherwise your 5090 is amp,solid....?

You say you no longer have a problem. The least you can do is give us the references of your equipment so that we can compare it with our solutions.
Anyway...

You're absolutely right, we've paid and we're entitled to get what we paid for.
