Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED - black screens, connection losses, and more

Hello,

I have the G9 OLED for two days and have really lousy problems:

- when I start a game in fullscreen mode with the native resolution of 5120x1440, the monitor sometimes shuts down. There's no way to restore the image until I'm somehow able to either blindly quit the game or restart the PC - sometimes only the reset button helps.

- When starting certain apps or fullscreen applications, I hear a sound like a device is connecting and disconnecting. I also hear this randomly - it stopped, when I disconnected the USB cable from the monitor and ramains happening when I start full screen applications and exit them.

- I randomly have black screens every now and then without doing anything specific. And quite extreme: If I watch a video via any media player, enter fullscreen and move the mouse, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then returns. If I move the mouse again, the screen goes black again. This goes on and on.

- I am using an RTX 4090 with this monitor. When I set it to 240 Hz, the GPU memory clock rate is not downclocked when the PC is idle. That means the GPU memory clock (not GPU clock) is always running at max clock, which is not ideal for power consumption and temperatures.

I use a Display Port 1.4 cable with 32.4 Gbit/s, but also have an HDMI 2.1 cable with 48 gbit/s. This happens with both cables. As soon as I lower the monitor Hz to 120, the memory MHz goes back to the correct idle value, as it should. Is this a normal behavior?

- when I turn off VRR on the monitor, it is no longer possible to set the native resolution.

The monitor is running on the latest firmware version 1023.

These are honestly such massive problems that I am almost determined to return this monitor to Samsung as soon as possible.

Any input from more experienced Samsung users who have been able to remedy these issues?

Thanks so much!

I have the LS49CG954SNXZA. The 2044.4 version is not listed on the download's page as @ItzTheDay mentioned. I just checked OTA and 6500 was available. I performed the update and there is some considerable improvement so far. I'll need to give it a week or so and run though all my scenarios to see how it performs.

Check OTA (Over the Air) by going into the monitor menu under Software Updates and force a check.

I'm not even getting the 6500 update. As far as I'm aware, the updates are being rolled out via OTA depending on serial numbers.

All I get is a message saying ‘no update available’ - I'm in 2022.1.
If version 2044 solves the problems, why isn't Samsung releasing it?
It's as if they're deliberately trying to keep us on our toes for as long as possible!

Also, have you noticed the poor quality of the black reflective coating on the 2023 g9 models?
Despite all the precautions you could take to clean the panel (microfibre cloth), it will inexorably end up being scratched (micro-scratches) and worse still, over time, the black coating will fade permanently, leaving a sort of white veil that's impossible to clean!
Frankly, I'm so sorry I bought this thing!

I meant 2000.2 not 2022.1

same here. no update, stuck on 2000.2. tried every setting on the screen and max i can get is 5120x1440 @60 with hdr, g-sync and 8 bit color. any higher color bit (10 or 12) or hz results in screen dissconnecting. before i tought it was my graphics card (1080ti) that was the problem but today i got my 5080 and still got the same issue... this sucks

It’s not your graphics card it’s a combination of the monitor, not being able to hold the correct refresh rate and more than likely Nvidia. I have a Linux PC that uses an AMD card and it’s able to get the refresh instantly. I also have a MacBook Pro that’s using the display poured out and it’s able to get the full resolution at 60 and 120 Hz. I also have a KVM switch that lets me switch back-and-forth between the Nvidia, PC and the laptop Mac, and when I switched to the PC, it has all sorts of monitor errors and is unable to regain a signal, unless I go into the options and enable active sync once active sync is enabled the monitor can pop on almost immediately except you get the black screen issues. If you have black screen issues, you can turn active sync, adaptive sync off and drop down to 120 Hz with no HDR and the monitor will stay on basically forever. This is looking more and more like an issue with Nvidia and the way that their graphics cards work with resolutions and refresh rates and or a bandwidth problem where the monitor is just unable to maintain the correct bandwidth to deal with the higher refresh rates that Nvidia can request.

yeah, its sad too see. when you spend a, for many people, monthly income on a monitor you expect it too work like advertised. even more so when you spend another monthly income on a graphics card....
