Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED - black screens, connection losses, and more

Hello,

I have the G9 OLED for two days and have really lousy problems:

- when I start a game in fullscreen mode with the native resolution of 5120x1440, the monitor sometimes shuts down. There's no way to restore the image until I'm somehow able to either blindly quit the game or restart the PC - sometimes only the reset button helps.

- When starting certain apps or fullscreen applications, I hear a sound like a device is connecting and disconnecting. I also hear this randomly - it stopped, when I disconnected the USB cable from the monitor and ramains happening when I start full screen applications and exit them.

- I randomly have black screens every now and then without doing anything specific. And quite extreme: If I watch a video via any media player, enter fullscreen and move the mouse, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then returns. If I move the mouse again, the screen goes black again. This goes on and on.

- I am using an RTX 4090 with this monitor. When I set it to 240 Hz, the GPU memory clock rate is not downclocked when the PC is idle. That means the GPU memory clock (not GPU clock) is always running at max clock, which is not ideal for power consumption and temperatures.

I use a Display Port 1.4 cable with 32.4 Gbit/s, but also have an HDMI 2.1 cable with 48 gbit/s. This happens with both cables. As soon as I lower the monitor Hz to 120, the memory MHz goes back to the correct idle value, as it should. Is this a normal behavior?

- when I turn off VRR on the monitor, it is no longer possible to set the native resolution.

The monitor is running on the latest firmware version 1023.

These are honestly such massive problems that I am almost determined to return this monitor to Samsung as soon as possible.

Any input from more experienced Samsung users who have been able to remedy these issues?

Thanks so much!

I can also confirm that since installing 1007.1 early in August I have not had a single issue and i have pretty much used it every day or 2 days. Although now that everything is working perfect I'm kind of scared to update to the latest nvidia drivers just in case, and I am already 2 versions behind, but i would rather keep everything in a working state for now than risk having an update cause problems again. I'm also using a DP 1.4

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Having replaced my HDMI, Display Port and switched between the two types over the past week without any joy, I decided to look at my graphics card cable. I have a 4090 GPU which supports PCIe 5.0 but it turns out even though my motherboard also supports PCIe 5.0, the riser cable that came with my PC case only supports PCIe 4.0 which means that a fair amount of bandwidth is not being used. Now, having replaced my GPU connection with a PCIe 5.0 cable, to my surprise there is NO black screen and spinning circle.

I will keep testing as I have only tested a few games so far but this could be the reason. The same logic would apply if your GPU supports PCIe 4.0 but you are using a PCIe 3.0 cable to connect to your motherboard. The only way to find out is to research your GPU, motherboard capacity and cable capacity (if you use a riser/extended and don't connect your GPU directly to your motherboard). You want to ensure they are all the same.

Edit: I also had to turn G-Sync off but still get all the benefits playing Cyberpunk via HDMI 2.1 graphics still look amazing at top settings (albeit 60fps): https://imgur.com/a/FGTp33y

Interesting. I'm using a 4060 Ti RTX which is PCIe 4.0, riser cable is PCIe 4.0, motherboard slot is PCIe 5.0 16x, so this shouldn't be an issue in my case as the GPU is the low man on the totem pole, so to speak. Can't hurt to move it to the 4.0 slot. Maybe I'll get it a try.

i have the same issue with random black screens and i can't use multiple displays because whenever i plug another display the g9 goes black and it resets everything, i reached to the customer service and they kept telling me the problem was my pc lol.

i made sure to have all drivers up to date but they just want an excuse to not replacing it

My screen started going black in the middle of playing games. This is absolutely ridiculous, this is actually the worst monitor I ever used.

After a bunch of run around, they are finally sending me a new monitor to replace the one they made worse. That said, I'm fairly confident it is still going to have the black screen issue.

Hi, how long past the return window were you? And did they make you service the monitor first? I am almost up with my one year warranty on the monitor, and it has been serviced already with no fix to the above issues. Now, Samsung wants me to have it serviced again despite the first time not fixing the issue. I am wondering what steps you took to get a replacement? I have emailed the CEO about this issue recently as well, haven't gotten a response yet.

There's not enough room on the internet to cover what I've went through to get to this point LOL. The short is, they attempted 2 repairs. I've only had the monitor a few months. To be fair, I don't think a new monitor is going to resolve the issue, but I'm hoping it fixes the additional issues they created.

Lol got it, and trust me, I understand. For all reading this board, for what it is worth, and maybe no mystery here, at least from my experience, this is definitely an issue with the "Smart" version of this monitor. I have both this one, and the non-smart version, and have experienced no issues on the latter. Supposedly from the techs, there are two motherboards present inside the monitor. I have  had both replaced already, which didn't alleviate the issue. Points to a firmware issue, but who knows. What a joke this is, will be the last Samsung monitor I buy.

Have you tried disabling HDR in Windows and in the game?
