Hopefully someone can help/advise on the problem I've got with my Smart TV (UE40D5520RKXXU).

A few days ago the remote was used to power the TV up but it wouldn't get passed the start-up screen switching itself off then trying to restart reaching the same point and shutting down and restarting again, this just goes on and on.

Now the power is switched off as it won't start but when the power is switched on it automatically tries to start but fails every time as above.

The TV is about 6 years old, in perfect condition, I'd like to keep it but only if it's going to cost a reasonable amount to sort out.

Last year this same thing happend and I opened the back up to have a look around to see if anything obvious was wrong and with a many power on/offs it started up, much to my surprise, so the back was re-attached and we had been using it without any problems for the last 8 months.

Could the problem be in the software or is it a power supply problem? Hopefully someone can come up with a suggestion or two.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
i have the model  UE40JU6400 and since i bought it more than 5years ago, it did a perfect job.

I protected the energy line with an ups, to avoid problems, took away dust sometimes with vacuum cleaner, avoid humidity etc...
Suddenly happened the problem mentioned by many: the tv shuts down by itself, remains off for a random interval of time, and after a random time returns to be operative, and cycle this way.

There are several reasons for this to happen, the most common are, in my opinion:

- hardware problems (bolt, overload, cables, temperature, dust etc)

- software problems.

I started to search the cause of the problem, trying to avoid to bring it to a repair tech (they wants to be payed :)) and resisted to open it by myself, because i could damage it.

There was no reason for it to have the shutdown problem.

I read that there's a killswitch problem too, but it occurs when the tv is stolen, and mine is not stolen...

- first attempt i did was to disconnect power cable, and let it off for 15 minutes, then reconnected it and for some minutes it seemed to work, but after a random time....off cycle again...

- 2nd attempt. Bought a new power cable, i thought it could have been damaged in some way, even if it seemed good. Same as above... after a random time...off cycle again...

- 3th attempt. Reset all the settings in the tv menu, factory reset.... no clue.

-4th attempt. Hard reset of all settings (don't know if is the same of the menu) entering the service menu. About service menu, look but don't change nothing, except "factory reset". To enter service menu turn off tv. Press quick: info menu mute powerOn. The tv turns on, choose factory reset ok ok. The tv goes off and on, and  must be completed the initial configurations....didn't work... but this thing opened a doubt on me.

I noticed that everything was going good, until i connected to internet with wifi.... so i started to think it was a software problem/killswitch/firmware bug of some type.

In this situation avoid to do a firmware upgrade because if it stops while flashing you are in big trouble... so off cycle must be solved before do the firmware upgrade.

-5th attempt. Assuming was a software problem connected to the prior point, i did again a factory reset. This time i didn't connected the tv to internet, not configuring wifi. When i arrived to set time and date i tried to do it manually....once date and time was set correctly....off cycle again.... it was bad and good at the same time....i started to understand the problem...

-6th attempt. Assuming internet and auto date/time was a problem, and connecting to internet could be a problem i didn't set time/date, left manual and didn't set it. I tried to watch the Samsung Account settings of the tv.... i said to myself "lets try this". On the pc i resetted the Samsung account i created long time ago... This time was a bit more complex, i had to insert a phone number, do double authentications etc... Once i got ID and password i inserted on the tv menu, on the Samsung account option. This time i had to accept some privacy rules, new for me, because i remember i never saw it before.... i accepted privacy rules. Tv accepted and connected with the Samsung accounts data i inserted... everything seemed to work properly.

At this point i think i have found the solution.... i set time and date on "auto", connected to internet with wifi and no problem anymore at this time, the tv seems to work like before. Put back old (original) power cable (it was good) and was working. I am happy because i don't have to bring it to a tech repair.

Conclusions: i think something changed on UE laws about privacy, so customers to have a working tv must accept new privacy rules... well... you (Samsung) could simply tell to customers, and to old customers send an email, or publish the problem/solution, without force the customers to go to spend money in a tech repair store.... The tv, being connected to internet, must be registered with a valid email / phone number account.

Don't know why honestly, but this seems to be the problem.... big brother wants to know it...

If you don't do this there's a tv that stops working properly, and the on/off cycle appears.

I think, if it is not a different problem, i think this is the definitive solution.

Have fun

Same issue here, TV would reboot randomly, yesterday every 2 seconds, I finally managed to boot the TV by denying it network access on my network, I removed all network settings on the TV and all is good.
P.S. I'm an ICT network engineer, +20y of experience, I did some wireshark on my local LAN and i actually did see thousands (!!!) of connection attempts from my Samsung TV to the internet, while I do not even use the smart functions on the TV, because I have an Android box connected to it.
@Samsung, get your things together please, I'm planning to buy several TVs in the very near future, but no Samsung anymore, no way !

When you say you reversed the ribbon, did you mean you swapped the ribbons both on one side or turned it around?

Why doesn’t Samsung realize there is a fault in the TV itself? I’m sure they have to know this it seems to be very common. These TVs aren’t cheap yet we’re expected to pay to have the issue fixed when clearly it’s a fault in the tv. I’ve had mine just over a year and I’m having the exact same issue. I paid 700 for a tv that lasted 13 months yet I’m expected to pay more now? Why is there even a place to ask Samsung questions when you have done nothing but tell us you can’t help??????

I have previously on the same subject of random shutdown and restart. I tried a few amateur fixes accessed online - without opening up the innards of the TV !  The problem recurred so I took it to local repair shop and he replaced mother board at my expense. The problem recurred and he replaced something else. It was ok for a while and then issue recurred again. I took it next time to the official Samsung repair centre. I'm in Manchester but their engineers are about 20 miles away. They had the TV for 3 weeks waiting for parts etc and it cost me more than the local guy's efforts.

They repaired it permanently and it has worked now unfailingly for two years. The moral of the story is that Samsung know what's up with these TVs . Conspiracy theorists would say it's built-in obsolescence that manifests just outside of the  warranty term. I doubt this but truth is they will stay schtum until forced my media to do something about it - by which time later models will work better. This is simply typical of corporations looking to the bottom line.

By the way, a Toshiba TV we have in another room has an annoying feature of habitual nil or delayed response to the remote control. This again is a feature known to the manufacturer .

I did not reverse ribbons
UPDATE: TV is constantly rebooting, even without network access, I tried some ribbon workarounds found on Google, and some other tricks, nothing works, I contacted a local repair, to be continued...
Next TVs (yes that's plurar, will buy some dozens for business) will be Philips with Android, no more Samsung here
