Samsung Pay in Ireland 2020

It's now 2020, half a decade since Samsung announced Samsung Pay is coming to Ireland.

Can someone at Samsung make an effort pushing this up to some decision maker?

If you'd buy a Samsung smart watch you can't use any sort of mobile payment service. If you buy a cheap Chinese brand you get mobile payment with Google Pay.  Why should I replace my Galaxy Watch Active with a Samsung alternative when those are my options?

Samsung it is an awful pity you are supporting the spread of COVID-19 by not having contact less payments available in Ireland.  Shame on the misery you have caused here.

Seriously guys, read my earlier post in this thread. The issue is not Samsung. Contact whatever bank you use and put pressure on them to provide Samsung Pay services. Samsung can't do this otherwise.

I do not agree that this is not a samsung issue.  It is not conincidental that every single bank that trades in Ireland has said "no" to sansung.

AND even if that an amazing coincidence....why wouldn't samsung use google pay like fitbit.  They are years behind fitbit as a result of this, and samsung OR sales staff, do not make this clear when you are purchasing this watch!!

Well, they've lied to you then. All of the Irish banks have made individual decisions to implement apple pay, Google pay and some have done fitbit pay.

Without consumer pressure they won't introduce Samsung Pay. And why would they? All Samsung phones are Android and can install Google Pay anyway. Introducing Samsung pay would involve extra costs to the banks and would only serve to increase Samsung's sales of smart watches.

Not economically viable without public pressure.

You have to remember that on a global scale, Ireland is a tiny market.

Btw, please don't misunderstand me on this. I want Samsung Pay as much as anyone, but if you whinge at Samsung, there's a chance that they will push the app to Irish bank management boards, who will in turn look at the benefits to the bank, and there really aren't many benefits to the banks when they already support Google Pay.

Spot on. The demand needs to come from the banks. It's only then that Samsung will be able to proceed. My personal hope is that some of the fintechs might be the ones to push for this. I know Starling support Samsung Pay in the UK so when they get around to launching in Ireland it may be the easiest door to push on.

It's worth remembering though that Samsung Pay isn't even available in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal etc. etc. so it's hardly like we're the only ones having to wait.

Exactly. What it needs is for an international fintech like n26 or revolut or whoever to come into the Irish market. Once the big Irish banks lose a bit of market share over this they'll take notice.
