@cartoonist_ron: Please try pressing an holding on an empty area of your Home screen until the Home page preview windows appear, then swipe to Upday, and toggle the switch in the top right of the window so it greys out. Let me know if this helps.

Hi Andrew. Yes, I've finally got rid of it but not as you suggested. I often find that suggestions people make do not work on my particular phone. Swiping up didn't give me the option of selecting "Settings" so I went to it from the Home Screen. Holding my finger on an emptyt space on the Home Screen DID give me the option of going through the screens I had open and the "Samsung Free" was among them. I toggled it off by clicking on that option. Many thanks.

In Settings > Apps > Upday you will find a link to the app on google app store, from there you can uninstall it, and save 778Mb (YES nearly 1GB of App Data!!).

I did find the app in that location but it does not allow me to uninstall nor delete the app.
