I don't know if this is a well-known feature, but it can come in handy.
I use a browser just to have quick access to a few links for which there aren't apps. Those links are on my browser's opening page. If I happen to have a previous link opened, I'll have to close that window or press an icon to see the opening page of that browser.
If you long-press the app in question, in this case my browser, there might be additional options for you to create a specific link / widget to a feature within that app.
For example, if I long-press my Phone app, I have the option to create a widget to either Create contact, Search, or Missed calls. Just like widgets, you long-press the specific option and drag it to your Home screen.
You now have a specific widget to perform a task for an app. I trust I explained this well.
