Phone keeps lighting up during calls

Hello does anyone know why my phone screen keeps lighting up during calls? It keeps putting me in hold or clicking the Bluetooth buttons which makes my calls go onto my samsung watch. I've tried turning a few settings off after reading some things on Google but it's not working. I've got a phone case in that came with my phone and a normal screen protector so I'm not sure if that's effecting it at all

I'd turn off the screen. You might be turning stuff on with your ear.

I haven't talked that much (roughly 10 hours in a month), but I noticed when I remove the phone from my ear to change volume (I switch phones often so I tend to forget where they're at) och check time it is struggling to keep the screen off when I put it back to my ear.  If I keep it there I have no issues.

Are you facing the same problem?
