I have an eSIM from US Mobile which allows me to make calls, receive texts, and use data in France, where I'm currently on vacation. I need to use the +1 US phone number while traveling.
US Mobile only provided 1 GB of roaming data in France, which I quickly exhausted.
I then purchased an eSIM from Holafly that has unlimited data. It also has a +43 Austria number, but there are no minutes or texts available for that number, and thus I never want to use it.
In settings / SIM manager, I can enable either or both eSIMs. When both SIMs are enabled, I need to choose one.
My goal is to make calls with the US Mobile SIM, and use data on the Holafly SIM, simultaneously.
So far, I have been unable to accomplish that.
1) If the US Mobile is the only one enabled, the phone shows 4G LTE, and I can make calls using my US number, but there is no data. This is presumably because the 1GB of mobile data has been exceeded.
2) If I then enable the Holafly SIM additionally, but the primary SIM is set to US Mobile, data still does not work
3) If I change the primary SIM to Holafly, The phone switches to 5G, and data now works, but problems arise when I want to make a call.
The dialer tries to use the Holafly SIM for calls by default, and it uses the Austria number with no minutes. Thus, calls fail.
If I select the US Mobile SIM in the dialer, the call succeeds. However, the phone immediately disconnects from 5G.
Unfortunately, when I make calls to my financial institution, the identity verification is done through an app, which requires data access, which is not available. The result is that I'm unable to talk to a representative at my financial institution while on the go.
Is there any possible resolution to this ?
The phone shows multiple connections on top, one for each eSIM, with two different sets of bar, and the letter R for roaming. In the middle of those two sets of bars, I see the 5G symbol, for data.
It seems to me that the phone should be able to use cellular for calls on one eSIM, and use data simultaneously on the other eSIM, given that it shows 2 cell network connections simultaneously with the 5G data while idling. Somehow, it disables the 5G data when calling.
It is also very annoying to need to choose the SIM for calls for every caller or SMS recipient. At the very least, there should be a setting in the dialer to select the default SIM for calls, and it should be possible to set that default to a different one from the primary SIM for data.

I am able to manually choose the right SIM when dialing. But doing so disables the data SIM. I need both the call and data to work at the same time to authenticate to my bank while on the phone.

The S24 Ultra does not support two e-sim simultaneously.
