Message alert keeps repeating.

If I have repeat notifications on my messages, it keeps repeating even when the message has been read, which is really rather annoying. 

Does anyone else have this problem?

Have you tried Factory erase ? Before i trade it in I did it. Seems like it fixed the issue.

I haven't because I don't want to factory reset everything because I don't know what's causing it

The cause is OS become clogged glitchy after years of updates and patches. There is no other way other than factory erase. Simply back up necessary information and go for it. You will be impressed how fast your phone will become.
