Hi Lovely People.

You might want to grab a coffee.

A Few Thoughts about the new Samsung Screen and the new features it comes with.

Dynamic AMOLED 2X: This latest iteration of Samsung's AMOLED display technology delivers exceptional brightness, colour accuracy, and power efficiency. It can reach a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, significantly higher than the S23 Ultra's 1,750 nits, making it viewable even in bright sunlight. Additionally, it boasts a 100% Mobile Colour Volume in the DCI-P3 colour range, ensuring vibrant and realistic colours across the entire brightness spectrum.

The Adaptive Colour

Tone: Your Personal Display Chameleon

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's new "Adaptive Colour Tone" feature takes display customization to a whole new level. Here's how it works and its benefits:

Think of it like sunglasses for your phone: Instead of manually adjusting brightness and colour temperature, this feature automatically adapts the display based on your environment.

Imagine this: You're reading an eBook in a dimly lit room. The display automatically warms up, reducing harsh blues and creating a more comfortable reading experience. Step outside into the bright sun, and the display instantly cools down and brightens up, making everything easy to see.

How does it work? It uses sensors to detect the ambient light around you and then adjusts the colour temperature and white balance accordingly. So, no more fiddling with settings – your phone adjusts automatically!

Benefits:

  • Reduced eye strain: Warmer tones in low light are easier on your eyes, especially at night.
  • Improved readability: Cooler tones in bright light make text and images sharper and easier to see.
  • More natural viewing experience: The display feels more natural and less jarring when it adapts to your surroundings.
  • Convenience: No more manually adjusting display settings – it just works!

Is it for everyone? Some users prefer complete control over their display settings. While Adaptive Colour Tone offers a convenient solution, you can always turn it off and adjust things yourself if you prefer.

Overall, Adaptive Colour Tone is a smart and convenient feature that improves your viewing experience by automatically adjusting the display to your environment.

Q1: What is ‘Adaptive colour tone’ feature?

A1: The Adaptive colour tone feature is a colour optimization function available in the Galaxy S24 series. It adjusts the colour and white balance of the device screen based on the ambient brightness, providing more natural colours suited for different environments or lighting conditions.
 To enable the feature:
① Settings > Display > Adaptive colour tone
② Quick panel > Brightness bar > More options > Adaptive colour tone

Q2: How does the Adaptive colour tone function work?A2: The Adaptive colour tone function works by adjusting the colour and white balance according to various ambient brightness changes based on the brightness and light source. However, in low brightness conditions or strong light sources, such as outdoors, the Adaptive colour tone values prior to specific environmental conditions are applied instead.

Q3: What is the difference between ‘Adaptive colour tone’ feature and the ‘Eye comfort shield’ function?
A3: ‘Eye comfort shield’ is a function that automatically adjusts the colour temperature of the device screen over time according to lighting.
Meanwhile, the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function adjusts the colour to an optimized one according to ambient environment such as brightness and light source.

Q4: How do both ‘Adaptive colour tone’ and ‘Eye comfort shield’ function work together?
A4: When both functions are turned on, the colour of ‘Eye comfort shield’ is applied first, and then the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function optimizes the colour that doesn't interfere with sleep.

Q5: The display colour tone looks awkward after turning on the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function. / Blue tone seems prominent.
A5: After enabling the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function, you may notice some changes in the colours displayed on the screen that can be seen more intensified and prominent particularly as a blue tone. This can be attributed to the adjustment in white colour temperature. As a result, other colours in complementary relationship may appear slightly darker or different than usual. This is because of an optical illusion created by contrast and should not cause any concern.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS AND SUMMARY:

1. Having had the S9+ > S21 Ultra > S24 Ultra I have seen Samsung slowing transitioning away from Vivid and contrasty look (both in camera and screen) due to the endless complaints from consumers. It has been a love and hate relationship with some loving it and some don't.

2. Having received my S24 ultra I too initially saw the difference but quickly got used to it. The only thing it effects is the home screen icons which look a bit pale. It doesn't seem to affect your photos or videos etc.

3. The most complaint feature that VIVID vs NATURAL doesn't do anything is both correct and wrong in the sense for me it just switches the screen from between cool for vivid and warm for natural. Yes, it doesn't work the way it used to before and it could be intentional on the part of Samsung.  Read above post again.

4. There is also another feature under EYE COMFORT called ENHANCED COMFORT which when turned ON will lighten your fonts and make them less contrasty.

5. All in all, I feel Samsung has adopted a NATURAL Look and Feel with the S24 series and the VIVID was probably not an option they thought people would want as much and probably with the new screen tech and high brightness and HDR and stuff it may not be feasible.

6. At this point in time there are rumours that Samsung is listening to Consumers so do send FEEDBACK.

SOLUTIONS TO TRY ( Either one or a combination of the below)

1. Turn OFF EYE COMFORT

2. Turn OFF ENHANCED COMFORT if EYE COMFORT is ON

3. Someone suggested wipe caching the accessibilities settings (will come back on this one if I find it)

4. If it's really bad try a phone Wipe Cache and Repair Apps when in same Menu

5. Try Factory Resetting your Phone. (Wouldn't really recommend this as it won't really make much difference due to explained fact above. It might make a slight difference but not much)

FINAL THOUGHTS

I would say enjoy the phone as it's not really a deal breaker for a lot of people specially those coming from the s23 series (I have spoken to a few, and some didn't even notice)

There is a possibility Samsung might release some update for the VIVID and NATURAL Toggle or Just remove it to avoid confusion.

Comments and further discussions are Welcome. (Do post which phone you are coming from and what is washed out for you e.g.: icons, pictures, videos etc.)

Thanks for Reading if you made it this far.

Thanks. Since I had my s21 ultra. The common thing I found is that people who had the most issues had done a smarthswitch transfer, which I never do.
Obviously this muted screen is a different matter.

Interesting.

I did SS when I moved from Pixel 6 Pro to S23 Ultra and again to S24 Ultra.

I have seen several apps that I ended up reinstalling as there were issues. Otherwise it is mainly call and text history and images / videos (they are also backed up in a Google Photos).

@GoanGeek, if Samsung meant to desaturate the colours, you'd think they would've explained or released an official statement by now, especially after the stink this is kicking up, why on earth would they remove it (vivid/natural toggle) I just think it's broken and it needs a fix quickly (and some clarification).
It would've been a deal breaker for me personally if I hadn't already purchased and received the item, I've came from an a53 5g and have never had a flagship phone before at this price point, the colours on that were much better than S24 ultra, I've just forked out £1200 to be a beta tester 😠 🙃

Meant to add I tried developer options and contrast but it didn't make much difference to the colour balance or maybe I need to go to Specsavers 👀😉😀

Swapped from S23 Ultra and the screen on the S24 Ultra is massively worse. Like, it honestly bothers me every time I turn it on - and I noticed immediately after turning it on the first time. It's a deal breaker for me.

I thought it was obvious the toned down saturated colours, but by no means washed out. Actual content consumption looks exactly the same so I was never bothered. The screen itself looks better than the S23 Ultra in my opinion, far more pleasing with the anti reflective glass improvements and especially the PWM.

Keeping aside the issue with vivid and natural toggle which seems as an issue.

It's people coming from older devices which are really seeing the massive difference.
Those coming from the s23 series not so. Some of them seem not to notice it at all.
Also I am I wonder about people who have never used a Samsung before.

Coming from an S21 ultra I did notice it well.
But having it for a while I just feel the icons are less contrasty and then there's the issue of the Vivid and natural toggles which for me only goes from.cool to warm whi h don't really bother me that much as I use custom eye comfort.

S23U to S24U massive downgrade in colour, peak brightness is the same and grey backgrounds have grainy look to them, even looks like burnin already too. I've had every new flagship from Samsung since S6 and none have been this bad at launch.
