Hi Lovely People.

You might want to grab a coffee.

A Few Thoughts about the new Samsung Screen and the new features it comes with.

Dynamic AMOLED 2X: This latest iteration of Samsung's AMOLED display technology delivers exceptional brightness, colour accuracy, and power efficiency. It can reach a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, significantly higher than the S23 Ultra's 1,750 nits, making it viewable even in bright sunlight. Additionally, it boasts a 100% Mobile Colour Volume in the DCI-P3 colour range, ensuring vibrant and realistic colours across the entire brightness spectrum.

The Adaptive Colour

Tone: Your Personal Display Chameleon

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's new "Adaptive Colour Tone" feature takes display customization to a whole new level. Here's how it works and its benefits:

Think of it like sunglasses for your phone: Instead of manually adjusting brightness and colour temperature, this feature automatically adapts the display based on your environment.

Imagine this: You're reading an eBook in a dimly lit room. The display automatically warms up, reducing harsh blues and creating a more comfortable reading experience. Step outside into the bright sun, and the display instantly cools down and brightens up, making everything easy to see.

How does it work? It uses sensors to detect the ambient light around you and then adjusts the colour temperature and white balance accordingly. So, no more fiddling with settings – your phone adjusts automatically!

Benefits:

  • Reduced eye strain: Warmer tones in low light are easier on your eyes, especially at night.
  • Improved readability: Cooler tones in bright light make text and images sharper and easier to see.
  • More natural viewing experience: The display feels more natural and less jarring when it adapts to your surroundings.
  • Convenience: No more manually adjusting display settings – it just works!

Is it for everyone? Some users prefer complete control over their display settings. While Adaptive Colour Tone offers a convenient solution, you can always turn it off and adjust things yourself if you prefer.

Overall, Adaptive Colour Tone is a smart and convenient feature that improves your viewing experience by automatically adjusting the display to your environment.

Q1: What is ‘Adaptive colour tone’ feature?

A1: The Adaptive colour tone feature is a colour optimization function available in the Galaxy S24 series. It adjusts the colour and white balance of the device screen based on the ambient brightness, providing more natural colours suited for different environments or lighting conditions.
 To enable the feature:
① Settings > Display > Adaptive colour tone
② Quick panel > Brightness bar > More options > Adaptive colour tone

Q2: How does the Adaptive colour tone function work?A2: The Adaptive colour tone function works by adjusting the colour and white balance according to various ambient brightness changes based on the brightness and light source. However, in low brightness conditions or strong light sources, such as outdoors, the Adaptive colour tone values prior to specific environmental conditions are applied instead.

Q3: What is the difference between ‘Adaptive colour tone’ feature and the ‘Eye comfort shield’ function?
A3: ‘Eye comfort shield’ is a function that automatically adjusts the colour temperature of the device screen over time according to lighting.
Meanwhile, the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function adjusts the colour to an optimized one according to ambient environment such as brightness and light source.

Q4: How do both ‘Adaptive colour tone’ and ‘Eye comfort shield’ function work together?
A4: When both functions are turned on, the colour of ‘Eye comfort shield’ is applied first, and then the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function optimizes the colour that doesn't interfere with sleep.

Q5: The display colour tone looks awkward after turning on the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function. / Blue tone seems prominent.
A5: After enabling the ‘Adaptive colour tone’ function, you may notice some changes in the colours displayed on the screen that can be seen more intensified and prominent particularly as a blue tone. This can be attributed to the adjustment in white colour temperature. As a result, other colours in complementary relationship may appear slightly darker or different than usual. This is because of an optical illusion created by contrast and should not cause any concern.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS AND SUMMARY:

1. Having had the S9+ > S21 Ultra > S24 Ultra I have seen Samsung slowing transitioning away from Vivid and contrasty look (both in camera and screen) due to the endless complaints from consumers. It has been a love and hate relationship with some loving it and some don't.

2. Having received my S24 ultra I too initially saw the difference but quickly got used to it. The only thing it effects is the home screen icons which look a bit pale. It doesn't seem to affect your photos or videos etc.

3. The most complaint feature that VIVID vs NATURAL doesn't do anything is both correct and wrong in the sense for me it just switches the screen from between cool for vivid and warm for natural. Yes, it doesn't work the way it used to before and it could be intentional on the part of Samsung.  Read above post again.

4. There is also another feature under EYE COMFORT called ENHANCED COMFORT which when turned ON will lighten your fonts and make them less contrasty.

5. All in all, I feel Samsung has adopted a NATURAL Look and Feel with the S24 series and the VIVID was probably not an option they thought people would want as much and probably with the new screen tech and high brightness and HDR and stuff it may not be feasible.

6. At this point in time there are rumours that Samsung is listening to Consumers so do send FEEDBACK.

SOLUTIONS TO TRY ( Either one or a combination of the below)

1. Turn OFF EYE COMFORT

2. Turn OFF ENHANCED COMFORT if EYE COMFORT is ON

3. Someone suggested wipe caching the accessibilities settings (will come back on this one if I find it)

4. If it's really bad try a phone Wipe Cache and Repair Apps when in same Menu

5. Try Factory Resetting your Phone. (Wouldn't really recommend this as it won't really make much difference due to explained fact above. It might make a slight difference but not much)

FINAL THOUGHTS

I would say enjoy the phone as it's not really a deal breaker for a lot of people specially those coming from the s23 series (I have spoken to a few, and some didn't even notice)

There is a possibility Samsung might release some update for the VIVID and NATURAL Toggle or Just remove it to avoid confusion.

Comments and further discussions are Welcome. (Do post which phone you are coming from and what is washed out for you e.g.: icons, pictures, videos etc.)

Thanks for Reading if you made it this far.

I've had many Samsung phones, before I got the new S24 it was the S22. I was immediately struck by the washed out look of the display. Whenever I've gotten a Galaxy, since they implemented the Vivid vs Natural option, my impulse is to go with Natural. After all shouldn't we prefer "Natural". But I would find myself switching to Vivid in a few days. The natural seemed drab to me. Could it be because I keep my brightness way down. I keep it at about 20 percent unless I'm outside. When I turn brightness up I'm much more likely to get eye strain. My husband likes his brightness way up. Whenever he wants to show me something on his phone, the first thing I do is turn his brightness down. Everyone has different light sensitivities. Maybe we all perceive color differently. Since the Vivid/Natural option had been available to the owners of Galaxies for so long I really think they should keep it. I personally am hoping for a quick fix, but realistically, I'm not so sure.

I just came over from S9. The pics I just took in Moab Utah showed the deep blue sky and the colors of the scenery just as they were. On the S24 I can't get the deep blues or reds and greens. No matter what I do, they look somewhat washed out

People who says this is better, natural and more accurate colors are better than more saturated are IPhone type users which going to eat everything what brand will serv them. I choose Samsung for diferent reasons, I like to decide by my self how my contect will work and look on my screen, and that was for last many years. This time they give to as same option but uff option thet not work anymore. This time one kind of users will have own setting but second one will not. Im in second group! I like decide by my self what is better for my self and I like to have this option when I going to upgrade my phone from last year model! Why not?????

Another thing is brightness , I have both phones s23u and s24u on the table , one agains another to compare.

When I was choosing s24u as my new phone I been informed that new phone will be so much brighter than last year flagship, it was one from my points for decision. Finally when I compare both new 24u shows like for me 20-30% les brightness than old model which is a mega downgrade.

So everyone who is saying that everything is gooood, in my eyes are just a lemings... little animals which walks in big numbers to fing bad ending by jumping from the clifs.

Hi.

Everyone's opinions are appreciated but that doesn't mean you shoot down other people.

Lots of people have made a point that they would like Vivid mode back ( even if the colours are natural) as I guess that's one of the signature style most people seem to like over the years with Samsung.

It's in Samsung's interest maybe to give people the option again.

With technology involving and screens getting better lotsof things are gained or lost. Will have to see what Samsung will do about this.

Definitely post what you like and don't like as this is what this community is about.
Happy days.

Hi. Always had custom eycomfort shield ON has I my screen a bit off white bordering a bit on the warmer side.

Don't really like them auto as then it goes too warm for my taste

I like the custom eye comfort just under the T of the temperature.

Don't really see any point of adaptive colour unless maybe daytime.

@GoanGeek , thanks for this very elaborate piece of yours. Kudos. 👏👍

I'm also bothered, annoyed & quite saddened by the drab "Vivid" colours on the S24+ display. I huge step away from notorious very punchy & cheerful Samsung display colours I still love so much. I've always used Vivid colors settings on my Samsung mobile devices & I loved them on the AMOLED displays since the icons & app UIs pop out so much.

That said ... I understand Samsung's intention to give users more "natural color experience" which indeed works well in videos, games & especially in the photos - giving the viewer much up-scale impression (less artificial & cheap) . What looks weird, drab & cheap and what doesn't work at all in this new "color revolution" are the icons & in-app UIs. Here the colours are just too anaemic and sad even in the "Vivid" setting.

I'm eagerly awaiting Samsung's response in this very regard. What will they do to address the issue? If anything at all ...  🤔  Maybe all of this will be "addressed" with 10-bit colour depth displays in the future Samsung phones?
