I have had Samsung since the first Note arrived and have been a loyal customer ever since. This is not a Samsung bashing exercise, just some honest truths.

I use mapping software in the mountains and noticed an intermittent fault with GPS flipping and freezing. I recorded the issue and sent some samples to the mapping company. They could not replicate the issue and had not seen it before on any device. To be fair to them they offered 2 solutions, a refund of hundreds of pounds or specialised software to delve into the matter further that would involve lots of sending logs back and forth.

I contacted Samsung and was seen by an official repair partner. He saw the issue, tested the device which came back ok. On discussion with him, he admitted he had seen the issue many times and knew the fault was there. Unfortunately he said, it would be a case of arguing with Samsung for a replacement device. I am prepared to do that given I know the GPS Antenna/Magnometer/Accelerometer are all in the same unit, and there is evidence of the same issue across the Internet. Just having the engineer confirm it, is enough for me and my own user experience.

He also told me the amount of issues they are having with One UI 6 is quite large. I was part of the beta programme from day one, and although I never had major issues, obviously others are.

For a lot of users the GPS issue won't effect them, but for a person like myself who uses it a lot, I am left with a faulty device that was bought for that perpose. I tested the software on a different device and it worked fine.

There are reports where users reported GPS faults, reported and sent it to Samsung and then received either a repaired or replacement device. From those reports it sounded like there was a clear cut fault in GPS module. Not sure what can be done if their internal tests come back ok

True, we know the fault is there but intermittent. Repair guy comes and sees no issue. Can't ask him to walk a few miles to see it. He said he as visted people who's screens keep going off, but if it does not do it on day of visit, their hands are tied. Does not mean the fault is not there. Tough one, but for me, I think I will be having a change from Samsung and not upgrading my phone this time around. I need the security of a decent GPS antenna at minimum for back up in the mountains. Used to have a specific GPS device, but sold it this year given advances in mobile technology.
