I downgraded to the previous version. Download the apk via whatsapp.com. without uninstalling the current version i then installed that previous version whatsapp via that apk and then it worked normal again.
Altho it still says in the phone setting that the app has problem and keeps draining my battery but atmleast for the time being whatsapp works again. I can get notifications and it doesnt keep closing everytime i open it.

It does seem to have magically fixed itself after 24 hours. Blinking annoying

Same crash problems on s22, I tried to reinstall from play store without solving.
I solved only installing the official version of the apk from https://www.whatsapp.com/android. Install it without unistall the crashing one so avoiding loose messages.
Good luck

Thanks this seems to have worked for now - I downloaded official APK directly from whatsapp website and installed it. Thanks for the hint. Not sure why the hell the Playstore version isn't working.
Exect steps -
Go to settings -> Security -> Security and Privacy -> Install Unknown Apps -> Turn on Chrome
Open chrome (turn on desktop mode with three dots on the side)-
visit - www.whatsapp.com/android and click on "package installer"
Follow the prompt to "update whatsapp"
And hopefully this solves the problem for all!.
Turn off the apk install permission for chrome to be on the safe side (reverse the first step).

Thank for your well explained manual. This seems to fix it (for now) indeed.
I can now open a chat and add pictures/videos from my gallery again without WhatsApp crashing.

How do you install an older version? I only found them on third party websites and it feels sketchy to install software from there. I tried everything else including installing a new APK from the WhatsApp website as another user suggested but it didn't work. WhatsApp support isn't particularly helpful BTW. They keep making me repeat things I told them I have already tried. I am quite frustrated.

What did work for me was downloading the latest apk from the whatsapp website via the link 3 posts up and install that download "over" the existing download from the playstore. It says it will update. When going to whatsapp and press the 3 dots, go to settings, help, info about app. It says i am using version 2.23.21.86
In this version I no longer have the crashing whatsapp problems.
