Hi I have lost my WhatsApp messages of a year and a half have always backed up but they are gone can anyone help me thanks

you can only back up via whatsapp itself and not the device https://faq.whatsapp.com/481135090640375/?cms_platform=android  There can be problems if insufficient storage but  imagine this is not the case.

@Tina71: If you regularly backup your chats, then you may wish to try uninstalling WhatsApp (press and hold on the app icon > Uninstall), then re-install it. At the setup stage, you will be prompted to restore your backup, and this should hopefully resolve your issue. 

Alternatively, head to WhatsApp > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Settings > Chats > Keep chats archived > Off. This is just in case you have accidentally archived your chats (Chat history > Archive all chats), as this will reinstate the chat history when you next receive a message from a specific contact.
