Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED - black screens, connection losses, and more

Hello,

I have the G9 OLED for two days and have really lousy problems:

- when I start a game in fullscreen mode with the native resolution of 5120x1440, the monitor sometimes shuts down. There's no way to restore the image until I'm somehow able to either blindly quit the game or restart the PC - sometimes only the reset button helps.

- When starting certain apps or fullscreen applications, I hear a sound like a device is connecting and disconnecting. I also hear this randomly - it stopped, when I disconnected the USB cable from the monitor and ramains happening when I start full screen applications and exit them.

- I randomly have black screens every now and then without doing anything specific. And quite extreme: If I watch a video via any media player, enter fullscreen and move the mouse, the screen goes black for 3 seconds and then returns. If I move the mouse again, the screen goes black again. This goes on and on.

- I am using an RTX 4090 with this monitor. When I set it to 240 Hz, the GPU memory clock rate is not downclocked when the PC is idle. That means the GPU memory clock (not GPU clock) is always running at max clock, which is not ideal for power consumption and temperatures.

I use a Display Port 1.4 cable with 32.4 Gbit/s, but also have an HDMI 2.1 cable with 48 gbit/s. This happens with both cables. As soon as I lower the monitor Hz to 120, the memory MHz goes back to the correct idle value, as it should. Is this a normal behavior?

- when I turn off VRR on the monitor, it is no longer possible to set the native resolution.

The monitor is running on the latest firmware version 1023.

These are honestly such massive problems that I am almost determined to return this monitor to Samsung as soon as possible.

Any input from more experienced Samsung users who have been able to remedy these issues?

Thanks so much!

"Also the HDMI, from what I gathered, is more stable and less prone to blackscreens, but it doesn't support 240Hz"

really not sure this is correct, at least not for the resolution of this monitor. The max is 120 for 4k but for 1440p hdmi 2.1 will do 240. you should have the option in the nvidia control panel and windows display setting. I've certainly had it set at 240 with hdmi 2.1 and it was showing up as such also in the monitor information.

I can't really test hdmi with regards to the black screening as it just keeps disconnecting wether it's on 120 or 240. At first I thought this was just in regards to the 3090s bandwidth limitation because i use multiple monitors but, nope, does the same thing if it's just the one monitor connected.

Still no problems? That's good news.  Still awaiting the firmware update for this one!

Both DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 support 240hz. HDMI 2.1 actually has higher bandwidth than DP 1.4.

Also, where's that option to disable VRR? That's only possible in the Nvidia control panel afaik.

Switching to 120hz, disabling G-Sync, factory reset - nothing helps to completely solve the black screen issue.

hello :smiling-face: I know you were not replying to me, however i can answer your question about the VRR..at least on the G93..if you have the G95 i'm sure there is a similar option..

but if you go to menu > system then you have to scroll down to the next page in the system menu you'll see "VRR Control"

Keep press the Play/Pause on the remote, Game Mode Settings in the middle of the bar, Adaptive-Synch = Off.

ok for the HDMI cable, I guess it's also good for 10bit color. I don't think I have one around if it wasn't in the box, is it worthed to get one to test it?

yes the HDMI will do what DP will do so yes 10 bit colour...it'll actually allow 12 bit colour which you *can* select in the nvidia control panel but the monitor itself max is 10 bit so i can't see it making any difference although i've seen people saying it's better! However unless some of the colours change but are still within the 10 bit spectrum the monitor can't display it so *shrug*

You should have a hdmi cable with it. normal size to micro.

i mentioned about the monitor disconnecting (not black screening) earlier. I had a 3rd party hdmi 2.1 cable. I've just decided for the sake of testing to use the one supplied. i was reticient to do this because as is normally the case the cable is really short...well at least for my purposes!

So far it's not disconnected at all. this has been about half an hour now and it seems to work fine with 2 other screens active as well. the 3rd doesn't work but that's fine beause that's the gpu's limitation and I don't have the oled on whilst i'm working. So bearing this in mind i'm going to shuffle my equipment about so i can use the monitor comfortably and see if i get any black screening but so far no disconnections. I can't say for sure if the cable is bad because I don't have another one of the same brand to test against, however it's 3 metres in length so that might be the cause.

Thanks, but that setting doesn't enable or disable VRR. I've had it set to it's default setting (off) since I got the monitor and I'm using VRR, Adaptive Sync and G-Sync.

Here's a description I found:

The screen flickers on and off
If you've enabled VRR (FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync) settings on your PC and experience screen flickering during gaming or content playback, consider turning on the monitor's VRR Control feature. VRR Control optimizes the signals coming from the GPU to mitigate screen flickering; it’s an additional feature designed to enhance the viewing experience.

Ah right I've always just left it on anyway apart from trying it off to see if it helped the black screening. Appreciate the correction! Thank you!
