I wasn't sure whether Samsung monitor this forum, so I thought I'd post here and submit as an idea. See what you all think?

I have a suggested improvement for the Galaxy Watch Ultra (and others) sleep monitoring. I've noticed that when I wake up and lie in bed for an hour (watching reels, obviously) my phone counts this as sleep time until I get up and take my first steps. Therefore, it's pretty inaccurate. Surely a Galaxy Watch and a Galaxy phone should work in conjunction and know that I'm awake if I've unlocked my phone with a fingerprint or whatever and I'm actually using it? At that point, the sleep period should end - but it isn't.

@fbs4800: While I do see how this would be a useful feature, the Sleep tracking feature requires you to tap on the Health app on your Watch, and select Sleep, in order to view the data that has been gathered during the night. This will also stop the tracker if you remain in bed after you have woken, as the period of inactivity may be read as part of your sleep pattern.

Which surely is a manual step that shouldn't be needed? If my phone is connected to my watch and they're both tracking my sleep, the second I unlock my phone I must be awake.

If it can't see that as an end to sleep tracking - how can the recorded data be accurate?

It seems like a fairly straightforward and simple suggestion to implement.

Any idea on how this could be put to the developers?

@fbs4800: Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. The Research and Development Team have looked into your suggestion, and have replied with the following:

"There is already a functionality to check if user has started using their phone and to stop recording sleep when it happens. The mobile side informs the wearable to stop recording sleep as soon as user opens Samsung Health on phone. If the user is not wearing a watch, in that case estimated sleep is not recorded after screen lock is opened."

I hope this helps.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for taking the time to pass this on to the Research and Development team and for your response.

However, I’d like to raise a concern regarding the explanation provided. From what I understand, sleep tracking stops if you unlock your phone without wearing the watch, but if you are wearing the watch, the monitoring continues—even if you’re actively using your phone for browsing or watching media. This strikes me as completely illogical.

Why should there be a distinction between wearing the watch or not when it comes to using the phone? If I’m using my phone, that clearly indicates I’m awake, regardless of whether I’m wearing the watch. This system creates a situation where, unless I remember to manually open Samsung Health and stop the sleep tracking, it falsely records activity as sleep—essentially putting me at a disadvantage for using the watch in conjunction with my phone.

To me, this sounds like a significant design flaw. In 2024, wearable and phone integration should be advanced enough to automatically detect when I’m awake and adjust accordingly. Relying on the user to manually stop tracking via the app feels outdated and inefficient.

Could you please push this feedback further, as the current explanation and system seem flawed? I’d really appreciate any efforts to revisit this logic and refine the feature.

Thanks again for your help and for following up.
