Galaxy Watch - screen wake up/turn off behaviour is irritating

I got my Galaxy Watch on Friday and for the most part I love it. However, a couple of things really bug me about a) the consistency of the wake up gesture and b) its tendency to turn the screen off much more quickly than it should.

So for a) - sometimes I just find that the wake up gesture doesn't work at all and I have to put my arm down and then back up again until it works. This feature is one of the most fundamental aspects of a smart watch that needs to work. It is especially noticable if I'm lying down but occasionally causes issues when sitting or standing. I think it's something your engineers really need to look at as, after a quick Google, I've seen many people complain about it on the Gear S3. I hope this is looked into as the fact it was an issue back then but still hasn't been fixed is a bit of a bad sign to me...

For b) I have 2 main issues. 1 is that the screen timeout setting only applies if the watch was woken up by the buttons and not by the wake up gesture. I think it's fine to have a different screen timeout if it was woken by gesture, but it should really be a configurable option.

The other annoyance is that the screen turns off when you tilt the watch back down. I think this is OK if you've woken the watch up with a gesture but it should be possible to disable this if the watch has been woken up by buttons or the dial.

It is VERY irritating that it stays on for only 6 sec.  It doesn't give my old eyes time enough to even read the various items displayed, date, time, steps, weather, battery, etc.  I am always having to re-wake the watch.  Samsung really either needs to make the wake on gesture follow the screen timeout setting, or make a new setting that can be changed.

Same thing here. Also while I am swimming the work out screen comes on as scheduled but goes away fast because of hand movement. I tried chating with Samsung techs but they do not know their own product.

Has any solution been found for the display turning off before user chosen duration because you move a millimeter.

You have to hold completely still to use the watch which defeats the purpose for any activity.

Lots of other people piling on other problems to this thread. The closest thing to almost fixing the problem in the original post is turning the "Orientation" to the opposite wrist you wear your watch.

Really dumb.

Samsung really should keep the screen on for a period of time regardless of gesture after a notification wakes up the display. OR FIX THE GESTURE!!! 😠

I;'m on the Watch 5 Pro and this is still happening.  What a s***tshow

I have at least 75% battery remaining after wearing and using my Pro 5 watch more than 16 hrs a day. I don't like that the face doesn't stay brightly lit like an ordinary watch.

As you can see by my comment to the complaint above, I want my watch to stay brightly lit for all the time I am wearing it. I charge it  every night, so any drain on the battery is immaterial. Please have developers create a fix for this.

It appears that even after a user who wants the watch to tell time all the time purposefully selects “always on,” there is still a mandated “timeout” mode that kicks in after preset wait times ranging 10 seconds to 5 minutes which will always override and negate the “always on” setting.

If that is true, then until software is changed to allow “timeout” to be switched off, there is in fact no true “always on” mode. There is only what should be more accurately called “on most of the time but only until the watch automatically goes dark in timeout mode” which is different setting (as anyone wondering what time it is and why their watch is blacked out in “always on” mode can confirm).

I keep coming back to this everytime I try this watch out again after having put away what is otherwise neither smart nor watch, being just a completely dark and heavy piece of jewelry. Maybe I’m mistaken though, I hope so!
