XBOX Series X - Q80T Game Mode Issues

So I received my Xbox Series X today, connected it to HDMI 4 using the bundled HDMI 2.1 cable and everything was fine until...I tried to play a game. Settings on the console were 4K, 120hz with HDR10 on auto and VRR enabled. As soon as I start a game my Q80T (55 inch) disconnects from the Xbox and shows a no signal error. From here I can press the Xbox button on the controller and switch apps and then I get significant screen tearing and flickering in menus.

As soon as I disable VRR on the Xbox it works fine. Hoping someone else has tested this with other cables or can offer solutions.

This guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8-6DmN9Gw4&feature=youtu.be was able to demonstrate that 4K 120hz with Freesync was possible on PC, so I'm hoping an update to TV or Xbox firmware will sort it out.

Edit: as Kyljaiden pointed out, some regions have version 1403 firmware. To clarify, I'm in Australia and we do not have that firmware update as yet and are stuck on 1402. Need to wait for confirmation from another user that 1403 replicates the 120hz VRR issues.

Edit2: Daparky shared this link https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/xba_console/known-issues-on-xbox-series-xs/221c9d7f-d... confirming that Microsoft are aware of the issues.

Edit3: SOLVED - a number of users have reported that 1403 firmware fixes the issue I've detailed. Unfortunately some regions do not have access to this firmware yet and will simply need to wait until Samsung push out the updates locally.

I believe this is the 1403 update, but the response I got doesn't specify that explicitly. As others have said the best thing to do is keep reporting the issues to Samsung as they are encountered. Hopefully we get a fix soon!

I can verify, that the 1403 update was released for Australia Q80T 2 days ago, I play my Xbox Series X games at 120Hz mode using this TV and have no issues anymore at this stage.

Games tested @ 120 Hz with VRR On;

  • Dirt 5 = No Issues
  • COD Cold War = No Issues
  • Ori & the will of the Wisps = No Issues
  • Another 8 Games that have no 120Hz setting in game, but Xbox still set using 120Hz mode = No Issues.

I'll keep you updated if anything changes.

It wasn't good test 4k120hz Q80t FW1403 Hungary.

Game test : 4k120hz+VRR Ori & the will of the Wisps = not good, Sometimes flashing black image.

4k120hz+VRR Assassins Creed Valhalla = not good, Sometimes flashing black image.

Strange, I haven't experienced flashing black image. Does this only happen in the 120Hz mode with VRR on? As that's sounds more like a loose or dirty HDMI connection symptom.

4k60hz VRR ON = Perfect for all games! I do not understand. 😥

Have you tried 120Hz with VRR ON? What is that result?

Also, does the flashing black screen happen at any stage of the game, or at a set point of the game?

And finally does it only flash black screen in those games? What about when you are just on the Xbox Dashboard, is that normal?

If all else fails, I would try setting TV back to factory default, it will still keep the 1403 firmware, but maybe it corrupted something when updating, its just a thought.

yes, I've tried it in every mode. (4k120 VRR ON/OFF)

He does it every game. Not good only 120hz.

I also did a factory reset on TV, No results. 🙁

I have heard that the 49 inch Q80T  cannot play at 120fps on the series x. Is this true

Does 120 work outside game mode? For example, if I’m plugged into the 2.1 port, have the Xbox set to 120, but play in Standard picture mode, will I still benefit from 120? Or is it only game mode? Thanks
