Greetings,

I recently perchased a 65’ QLED TV model QN65Q6FNAF. I connected a 1TB HardDrive to the modem/router via USB. Yesterday I was playing some video files and had no problems but today I get a message that that file format is not supported. I didn’t do anything to the settings on the TV or the modem/router. I have other video files on the HardDrive which I can play without any problems. The problematic files have .avi extension and in the lower left corner it says the format is “x-msvideo”.

Edit:

I plugged the Hard Drive directly in the TV via the USB and it still doesn’t want to play those files (the other ones are still fine) but now instead of “x-msvideo” for format it says .avi, which they are but the TV doesn’t want to play them.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong or how can I fix it?

All those workarounds are nonsensical, considering er are speaking about top of the range series 8 or 9 TVs.

a 29€ fire stick can play all those formats flawlessly, why on earth shall I accept a 2000$ smart TV couldn't.

SAMSUNG, you've found the perfect strategy to loose your customers. FOREVER!

Wish I had seen this before I got Qled. Worked for almost a month , enough time so cant return to bestbuy

Now nothing.  I am way passed pissed over this and I believe the timing was on purpose as well.

There are probably many who will find out the same way I did so i will post this on social media as well.

For anyone reading this DO NOT BUY A NEW SAMSUNG TV.  Better off with an older model!

Same problem here. Really a shame. Samsung does not support either .avi nor .mkv Files, which is ridicolous. With this missing feature, I won´t buy a Samsung TV ever again.

Same problem here! It seems that they are forcing people to use streaming services instead.

Samsung TV only plays AVI encoded with Divx 3.11/4.x/5.x/6.1, XviD, H.264 BP/MP/HP, MPEG-4 SP/ASP, Motion JPEG. If your AVI files are encoded with other codec, Samsung TV will not play.  (I didn't get this helpful info from Samsung Live Chat).  I'm in the process of converting my avi files to mp4 via FreeConvert.com ($9.99 for a month).  Pretty poor that my old Samsung TV played avi no problem ... whereas my new 'Smart' TV ... cannot.  There's progress for you.

Yes, these are the supported codecs for avi’s. I may have a workaround for those encounter some days and it’s fine on others.

I just encountered this issues and was able to get around it by renaming the file (on a pc) then inserting the drive back to the set. I removed any special characters and also reduced what was a very long file name. In short rename the file to something short and without any characters. You should now be able constantly view those files.

Have had same problem a d pursued directly with Samsung. Seems the most recent Samsung TVs have been cleverly designed not to play avi files. There's progress for you. I play avi files from my laptop linked to TV.
