Folders Showing Empty on Samsung OLED TV with 5TB HDD – Any Fix?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Samsung OLED TV (S90D) in 65", and I’ve run into a weird issue with my external HDD. I’m hoping someone here might have experienced something similar or has some insight.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • I’m using a WD 5TB external HDD formatted in exFAT. Initially, when I connected it to the TV, some folders showed up as empty, and some random 4K/HD videos files couldn’t be read. Oddly, when I tested the same videos on a smaller 1TB WD HDD, they worked perfectly.
  • Thinking the HDD format might be an issue, I reformatted the 5TB drive with a cluster size of 2MB. This fixed the initial problem; I could now see all the videos. However, when I tried organizing the files (cutting and pasting videos into folders), the folders would show up as empty on the TV. The same operation on the 1TB HDD caused no issues at all.
  • The situation feels totally random, and I can’t identify any consistent factor causing this.
  • I have about 600 files spread across maybe 30 folders, which should be well below the 8000-file/folder limit Samsung specifies for external drives.

Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening or how to fix it? Is it an issue with the 5TB HDD, the cluster size, or the way the TV processes files? I’m at a loss here, and any advice or similar experiences would be super helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Are these video files .mkv? Because I'm having a similar issue where Samsung's media player isn't recognising some of my .mkv files
