Changing message alerts

Hi, ive worked out how to change my ringtone, but im trying to now change my incoming text alert for an mp3 clip ive downloaded.  I can get to the settings where i should be able to do this, but the list only shows the defaults like chirps or whatever, i cant get out of that to find where my clip is and tell the phone to use that instead.  Any ideas pls?

ok if you have pc or laptop plug your phone in pc using usb, the open phone file, and my file find notifications, then drag your music or mp3 tone in there, then unplug your phone now set your message or whatever notifications sound, you will see your music or tones in your phone notifications now
