VZW appears to be the CSC for Verizon in the US hence the issue. If you could source a Verizon pay as you go sim and insert that for a short time you may be able to receive updates.

We do not advise changing the Csc code due to the risks involved and it may not be possible to change from a US one to UK. Other Tech sites give information.

It was refurbished, and I bought it in Northampton. There was no box.

That is the software, Verizon ,a Network in US, had talked about sourcing verlizon Pay as you go sim). Flag if no Box, who was the seller? You could contact Samsung Support but do not think you will receive much further advice.
