Messenger app

I have Google Messages app installed in my mobile phone (Galaxy A13). When I receive a new message the messenger symbol appears in the lock screen indicating there is a new message. And in the Home screen the messenger's symbol shows there is one new message. However, when I open the messenger there Is not a new message. Why does that happen? At first I thought the app might need to be updated. I checked it and there are no new updates. What could be wrong?

I think that is the Google Messages App. I have it too and I have a similar bug on a more expensive phone. My app doesn't highlight unread messages. It did again for a short while and now I am unable to find unread messages again. I am not sure you are getting false notifications or your phone thinks that you have read a message and than I goes back and highlights it as not read. It is separate from google mail so it's not linked to unread emails. I have tried to identify the unread message but it's time consuming. I have also tried to mark all messages unread but that 'unread' messages could not be identified by the app. Finally now I just leave it like that.

@GeoA13: If you open your Notification panel by swiping down from the top left corner of the Home screen (after unlocking the phone) is there a corresponding notification for the Google Messages app? If so, try swiping it away to see if this resolves the issue. 

If this doesn't work, head to Settings > Apps > Google Messages (this will appears as 'Messages' in the list of apps, so make sure to tap on the option with the matching app thumbnail - blue bubble on a white background) > Storage > Clear cache.
