Can't verify phone number for RCS in Google Messages on a Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Greetings,

Google messages has been stuck on "verifying phone number" for days now after I factory reset my phone and logged into my Google account. I've also observed other odd behaviors:

  • When clicking on settings>Google>all services>phone number verification the phone will try to load something and then just display a retry button again and again.
  • When trying to change Google Account settings in system settings no personal info can be changed. It'll prompt me for my PIN and fingerprint but just go back to the previous screen after providing that info. It'll claim I'm offline even with a perfect connection. The only way I've been able to change account info is though the Chrome browser itself on Google's website.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Seems like a network issue. Might be a login issue. Try signing out of your google account and sign back in.

It might appear to be signed in but it could be failing, causing it to not be able to actually use account features. Had the same thing happen with my samsung account.

Say during login most of it worked, but a little background part failed causing it to not fully go through

I went to accounts and  backup>Google>remove account and then signed in again but no luck. Still trying to verify. I recently came from an iPhone and swapped the SIMs around if that's pertinent.

Aah, if you did a sim swap the phone will think your number is different. In google messages settings, go to advanced, phone number, tell it your real number. Usually it'd ask you to enter your real number if you've had a sim swap. But if it doesn't realise, you have to sorta tell it. Since it's rare this happens I don't see it much so don't have an exact solution. My guess is after you tell it your real number, reboot, go to the rcs page, hopefully it either works or has a prompt for your real number again

Hi @Brixbuster and warm welcome to the community 👋

Have you had a second device with Google messages RCS on with same sim card on z fold ? If so turn off you Z fold take out the sim card put into the old phone disable RCS messaging on the old one put the sim back into Z fold and it should be verified.

Hello,

This is my first and only Android device with RCS Google Messages however, I did enable RCS on my iPhone 13 mini if that matters.

I checked in advanced and the number was a match. I'll type it in again and reboot just in case.

Hm, that is strange then. Have you tried using mobile data? Your WiFi could be blocking it. Your cell carrier also might be causing issues. There's a lot of moving parts and a lack of easy ways to tell what's going wrong sadly

Do you still have your old phone so you could put the sim back and disable RCS on the old phone?

Yes I do still have it. I'll put the sim back in and disable RCS and unlink the phone number from iMessage and see if that changes anything.
