I had an interesting thing happen this morning ...

I have a TV set in the bedroom which I use to play Spotify for background music as I'm getting ready in the morning.  My phone was on the charger and when I grabbed it, I must have inadvertently depressed the volume up button; all of a sudden the volume setting on the TV jumped.  I thought that curious as I had not used the phone to turn the TV on or make any choices whatsoever.  

I didn't spend much time with this.    What is going on here?

Using same WiFi for them? You are using the Same Spotify account and it's connected on both devices, you control the settings and the music choices through the phone when the TV is connected to the phone via WiFi.

As @Star_girl said- I believe it was the media control within spotify
