HEIC format larger than JPG - S25 Ultra

Here are the sizes of the same photo:

HEIC:

• 200MP: 65.33MB
• 50MP: 27.77MB
• 12MP: 4.35MB

JPG:

• 200MP: 56.65MB
• 50MP: 21.02MB
• 12MP: 5.97MB

Except for the 12MP image, all other sizes are larger for HEIC.

Isn’t HEIC supposed to be about half the size of JPG?

Im confused, HEIC files are 25% larger?  I thought HEIC compresses better.  Also if you look at the description in "Advanced picture options" for "high efficiency picture" setting it says "Save space by capturing Photo mode pictures in high efficiency image format(HEIF)."  It clearly does not save space for 50MP and 200MP.  May be the way Samsung tweaked it prioritizes image quality over compression?

HEIC retains higher quality image details over JPEG, although uses newer techniques to keep file sizes similar.

Isn't HEIC an Apple picture file format. My phone as the option of JPG or HEIF. I've just taken 2 photos, the JPG was 3mb and the HEIF was 308kb. Both taken at 12mp.

Pls try 50mp and 200mp.  12 mp is smaller in heic but not larger resolutions.  Heic is not appls invention, but yeah apple seems to have  achieved smaller file size for 50mp pics compared to Samsung's implementation.  About half based on some YouTube reviews I have seen.  Which is significant.

I've got an S23 so no 200mp but just tried 50mp and JPG was 8.19mb HEIC was 1.12mmb. Yes your correct about it not being Apple.

Woow, that is interesting.  Hope someone else with s25 ultra can do the test and see if it's an s25 ultra issue.

HEIF is the container format. HEIC is a specific implementation of the HEIF standard, notably popularised by Apple. HEIC is kind of like a subset of HEIF.
