The other aspect that I can think of, is when I was looking at registered devices on my account, Google still recognised my old phone as the primary phone on the account for signing in etc. I signed out of the old phone, done a factory reset, gone onto Google accounts, and tried my best to remove it, but I do wonder whether Google is only saving location from that phone and not fully recognising the new phone. Sucks for me that I've already posted my old phone off for the trade in. If you've still got yours, go through it and make ***** sure everything is signed out and disassociated from your Google account. Make sure your new phone is the only phone on the account.

UPDATE: I have done this and my timeline is now sorted. I did not use the smart switch for the initial set up and when I confirmed that timeline is working that's when I have backed up via smart switch and everything is working now
