As long as smart switch can see the back up it should restore it, otherwise it's to Google photos

@Nicki Samsung Cloud no longer backs up photos, need to sync with One Drive (this would need to have been enabled though) or use other cloud services. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/One Driive
I do not work for Samsung or make Samsung Products but provide independent advice and valuable contributions.

Maybe one of the other folks could confirm this or is my memory that bad?

As mentioned, Samsung Cloud doesn't back up photos anymore, and they are pushing one drive.
I personally back up to Google One, and as you have realised, it won't show on the gallery once restored only in Google photos.
I actually kind of prefer it as then I more space on my phone .
Otherwise, you need to manually download your photos back to the gallery.
I would probably suggest a smart switch if it works.
Or manually create similar folders on your PC and back them up there regularly.
It's a pain, but it is what it is.
In fact, Google one has a good search function for face tagging, same like gallery, so check that out . Maybe you could quickly put your folders back together in Google photos.
Also, whatsapp now uses Google photos as backup as well, which is another bummer.
