S24 Ultra display noise

I think I found the reason for the grainy overlay of the S24 Ultra and perhaps all S24 series.

Simply try "Circle to search" CTS. On my phone, the screen starts glowing with tiny grains in the entire screen. Kind of little stars dance on all over the screen.

The pattern of these grains are very similar to the pattern that I see when I look on dark colors like plain gray color in a dark room, but instead of they glow and dance, they statically cover the entire screen like a glitch and it is always present no matter what you have on the screen. This can also potentially reduce the display quality showing content on it.

I tried to take a screen shot when you activate CTS. I hope it to be clear. But nevertheless,  you try it and see the effect on your phone.

If this is a glitch because of this CTS functionality, then it can be easily solved with an update. I hope Samsung to see this post. I will also try to convey them in the members app.

This is just speculation, but the noise could be a software trick to reduce black smearing, a similar thing can be seen in some VR headsets that use OLED displays. AMOLED panels are pretty infamous for smearing in dark color transitions, and I can see way less of it on the S24 display compared to my S22, and this noise might be part of the reason why.

Could be, that's also what I'm thinking. Maybe it's there to provide extra dim/brightness, or some sort of magic to protect the display from burn-ins.

I'd have black smearing rather than the grains, but probably would take the no burn-in option. We'll find out in the coming months I guess.

I hope we can get some clarity, whether it can be solved with an update or not, in a few days the time to replace the s24u expires and I wouldn't want to find myself with a screen like this forever.

I discovered one thing last night that shocked me. There is noise on white background as well. To notice this, the screen needs to be on the lowest possible brightness and you will see the entire screen is filled with these tiny grains. As soon as the brightness goes up, it supresses these grains for light backgrounds, but still noticeable on dark colors like dark grey.

My microscope is not capable enough as it has a tiny sensor. But two reasons can be explain this:
1. Grains are part of the glass to reduce the reflection. I know some people say they exist on non ultra models, but I haven't seen any proof so far. People could make mistake differentiating between these grains and noises of the background itself.

2. There is a software thing that makes certain number of pixels to glow darker. To me, it sounds very unlikely but what else can be.

I got the phone from my workplace, so I don't care that much although I don't like to see such problems in the display of Samsung phones that was one of the key selling points. If I bought the phone by my own money, I didn't hesitate one second to return it. Whatever the reason is, it is awful thing to look when you are in a dark room and play with your phone 🤢

I will confirm two things here. One, I have a plus model and I am 100% positive that I have the grains. Two, yes, the grains have always been there on all colors. Even on white, I can see it with naked eye. So it's not the glass.

The problem is people hyped the washed out colors a lot that imo, it is a lesser problem. One can get used to the colors after a while. But this noisy screen is  the bigger problem and no major talk is going on about it in the media

Great that you confirmed it. So there is a funny thing going on with the display.

Does anyone in possession of a microscope manage to make a video where you can see the real effect of this phenomenon? in order to publish it and have it bounce on many edia and try to receive a response from Samsung itself

I tried with all colors, the brightness is at 1% and the grain/noise is always present. The more you increase the liminosity, the more the grain/noise disappears. I think it's a PWM or hardware tuning issue that causes the pixels to misbehave in different ways

It is a hardware issue that cannot be fixed. If you have this defect return your phone.

Check out this post by a display scientist going in-depth on what's wrong and why you should return it.
